Surfrider Foundation Australia is a registered not for profit sea-roots organisation dedicated to the protection of Australia’s waves and beaches through Conservation, Activism, Research and Education or C.A.R.E.

Our Purpose is to protect oceans, waves and beaches through C.A.R.E.

Our Mission & Vision is to inspire an engaged surfing and coastal community who are passionate about protecting oceans, waves and beaches.

A little over 30 years ago, three passionate surfers in Malibu, California, found out that their favorite wave was about to be destroyed. Those three people worked with their local community and Government until they were satisfied that their iconic wave would be preserved. This was the genesis of Surfrider Foundation USA, which sparked a global movement of surfers and ocean enthusiasts to stand up for their coasts and local marine environments.

Today, the Surfrider Foundation movement has grown to 18 countries around the world.

Surfrider Foundation Australia (SFA) was founded in 1991, largely in response to poor water quality issues along Australia's east coast. Local surfers, being at the forefront of water quality, began recruiting volunteers for a series of demonstrations and actions to persuade decision makers to take action on this ongoing issue. The group has been working hard to protect Australia’s coastlines ever since.

Since its humble beginnings and as we approach our 29th year of operation, SFA has grown to over 18 volunteer branches and many more volunteer beach representatives tackling local and national coastal environmental issues at a sea-roots level around Australia.

With times of uncertainty, it hasn’t been easy. There’s still a lot of work to be done. Our work is critical. And our long-term success and growth is a tribute to our founders’ vision: that taking on an environmental battle may not be easy, but with constant pressure, endlessly applied, it can, and will, be won. The key to this is what makes our organization unique. (Surfrider Foundation Australia)

SUPERCHARGING OCEAN CONSERVATION ACTION

Ocean Unite was founded in 2015 to unify and mobilize impactful voices at key moments that matter to drive positive Ocean conservation action.

We are an expert group of leaders, thinkers, and strategists,
a movement accelerator at the forefront of driving positive change for people and the planet. We support key global events, build and create new business relationships, engage
a growing global audience, and disrupt the status
quo when necessary.

Through our Ocean Unite Network of global influencers, we amplify crucial Ocean messages to decision-makers in support of both our key “on-the-water” goals, such as protecting 30% of the Ocean by 2030 (30×30) and the many organizations working to secure Ocean health. (Ocean Unite)

Our vision is of a world where people live in peace, conscious of their common humanity and their shared responsibilities for each other, for the planet and for future generations.

We envisage a world in which there is universal respect for human rights; in which poverty has been eliminated; in which people are free from fear and oppression and are able to fulfil their true potential. (The Elders)

The Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center (“OLC”) was founded in 2016 as a 501(c)(3) by world renowned oceanographic explorer, conservationist and documentary filmmaker Fabien Cousteau to fulfill his dream of creating a vehicle for positive change in the world.

The OLC focuses on Public Awareness (SEE), Education (LEARN) and Special Projects (DO). Some of these activities and initiatives include: beach cleanups, dive missions, coral reef restoration, sea turtles restoration programs, and educational resources that can be used for elementary grades to the university level, as well as aquarium programming. These components allow us to empower communities and children to help restore local water ecosystems through the healthy “replanting” of key marine species and empower future stewards of ocean conservation.

Our Approach

Through knowledge and innovative technologies regarding ocean preservation, we collaborate with partners to develop educational programs and activities in aquatic conservation, restoration, and marine projects dedicated to protecting the Earth’s waters and its inhabitants for the future of our next generation.
