Spotify
has acquired US comedian Joe Rogan's podcast "The Joe Rogan Experience",
which will be available on the music streaming platform starting September 1,
and will then become exclusive to the platform later this year. The
company did not disclose financial details of the multi-year agreement, but the
deal is seen as part of the streaming platform's aim to transform itself into
the Netflix of audio. Rogan's
podcast is downloaded millions of times each month and is routinely featured among
the top podcasts on Apple's charts. He
has interviewed well-known politicians and businessmen on the show, including
Elon Musk and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. "We
will still have clips up on YouTube but full versions of the show will only be
on Spotify," Rogan said in an Instagram post on Wednesday morning. Rogan
maintained that he will still have full creative control over the show, which
has amassed over 8.4 million subscribers on it's YouTube channel since it's launch
in 2009. He also
added that the corresponding video episodes of the podcast will also be available
on Spotify as in-app vodcasts. Rogan
has denied requests from his fans to put the podcast on Spotify over several years,
addressing the issue directly with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler in an episode
in 2018. "We're
not on Spotify, and the reason why we're not on it is because it didn't make any
sense. They were like 'We want to put you on it, it's gonna be great for you.'
And I was like, how is it great? You guys are gonna make money," Rogan said. "The
artists get paid so little, so where is the money going?" Spotify,
which has more than a million podcasts on its platform and reaches nearly 300
million monthly users, last year acquired Gimlet Media, Anchor FM and Cutler Media,
companies that either create podcasts or help others to do so. (Reuters) |
