Radio
Ballroom is the most exciting thing to happen to clubs
in many decades.
Remember
the way it used to be! Well, it's back thanks to Ben
Starr and the RadioStarr team.
History
An
Italian, Guglielmo Marconi, is credited with initiating
the concept of radio. The theory of sending electro
waves through the air was developed as a means of
improving the then current system of transmitting
Morse which occurred via telegraph lines.
Because
wires were not necessary for this system to work,
it was appropriately called the wireless.
After
World War One, the concept of radio as a commercial
venture began to be explored.
Marconi
Industries was established in Britain and in America,
to broadcast presidential election results.
However,
this was not enough incentive for potential listeners
to buy radio sets.
Because
they could see the market would soon diminish, there
was a need to create alternative sources of revenue.
This was when advertising began. Hence, the introduction
of 'Commercial Radio'.
The
Australian Federal Government then introduced a Two-tier
Licensing System in 1927/28 under which they kept
control of the 'A Class' licenses (which later became
the ABC) and left 'B Class' licenses available for
private commercial ventures that were to be self-funding.
In
the 30s, 40s and early 50s, Radio was the main source
of entertainment for most families.
It
recognised the different needs to be catered for,
with 'soapies' for the women at home during the day
(eg. 'Portia Faces Life'), children's programmes in
the afternoons (eg. 'Superman'), and dramas in the
evening, when the family would sit around the radio.
'Big
Bands', variety shows, game shows, radio personalities,
sports broadcasting and soapies were the major form
of entertainment at this time. (Russ Walkington -
Director Radio School of Australia).

Concept
The
word 'Ball' as in ballroom derives from the Latin
'balare' meaning 'to dance'.
Waltz,
Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep and even the Progressive
Barn Dance are all typical of a time in history when
life was simpler, slower and men and women actually
touched when they danced.
The
2CH 1170 Radio Ballroom brings back the 'Olde Time
Dance Party' to your club.
Friday,
Saturdays and Sundays are available for three magical
hours from 7.00pm to 10.00pm.
Only
one venue per week will be promoted on Radio 2CH 1170
with bookings taken on a first come first served basis.
The
best in old time dance music will be provided by 2CH
1170's resident Mr Ballroom - Ben Starr.
