People over the age of 50 have been forgotten when it comes to commercial television viewing according to RTV, Sydney’s new free-to-air community programming on Channel 31.

Speaking at the preview of RTV in Sydney on June 3rd, RTV personality Tony Barber said that traditionally free-to-air television has targeted the 18 – 49 year old audiences, largely ignoring the mature demographic.

“RTV goes live in Sydney on June 17th and will cater to the forgotten demographic by providing specifically designed viewing for this segment of the community,” Tony said.

Tony heads the line-up of well-known Australian personalities alongside recently announced newcomer Ita Buttrose on brand new free-to-air RTV.

“People over the age of 40 watch more television than any other age group and RTV has designed a series of lifestyle, drama, comedy, travel and sport programs which cater specifically to their entertainment needs,” said Tony.

“We are proud to be leading the way in providing our viewers with entertainment they want.”

RTV offers local and international comedy and drama such as Roots, Power Without Glory, The Thornbirds, McHales Navy, I Love Lucy, and all the golden era movies plus locally produced programs covering sport, arts, travel, health, cooking and lifestyle.

RTV has been on air in Melbourne for the past year and reaches more than a million viewers on average per week.

“It’s an exciting time for Channel 31 and the Sydney community as it doubles our programming output,” said Community Television Sydney President Edmond Taouk.

Edmond said that the broadcast range and quality of signal for community broadcaster, Channel 31, would be vastly expanded for Sydney viewers with the installation of a new transmitter and antenna on Gore Hill.

“It will extend the viewing audience to more than 3 million people,” said Edmond.

“Until now Channel 31 reached a relatively small audience. The boost in the signal enables this massive increase in the viewing potential of the community channel.”

RTV goes live on Monday 17th June 2002 and is broadcast from 8am to 4pm on Channel 31, Community Television Sydney.
