Measuring Newspapers for Profit and Growth

"Measuring the newspaper business for profit and growth" is the theme of
next month's World Forum on Newspaper Strategy, the annual summit-style
meeting where a select group of senior newspaper executives examine the
major issues facing the industry.

Increasingly, technology is providing many new measurement techniques for
the newspaper business. Yet often newspapers do not exploit all available
data in the management and development of their businesses.

The Forum, to be held on 25 and 26 September in a chateau near Paris, will
explore and develop important measurement criteria and the key measures that can be used to improve revenues and increase readership.

The summit-style Forum, organised by the World Association of Newspapers and the newspaper technology association IFRA, combines a limited number of presentations with small group discussions to allow participants to examine
strategic issues with their peers from around the world. Unlike many other
events, conference speakers attend the full programme and are available for
in-depth questioning.

The World Forum on Newspaper Strategy, created by WAN in 1997, has become the premier event internationally for top newspaper executives wishing to examine future strategy with a small group of colleagues. Participation is limited to 60 newspaper publishers, CEO's and chief editors, with other managers and executives taking part only if they accompany their chief executives.

A very limited number of invitations remain for the event. For full details,

Topics to be covered at this year's Forum include:

-The value of the newspaper business. How do the newspaper management team, potential investors, owners and shareholders measure the efficiency and success of a newspaper?

-Measuring advertising sales. Are new systems and processes delivering
efficiency and more revenue?

-Measuring circulation and marketing activity. How to exploit new channels
to deliver more sales.

-Measuring editorial output. Examples of how editorial measurement has led
to readership benefits, and a discussion on the opportunities and potential
drawbacks of measuring editorial.

The World Forum on Newspaper Strategy is supported by the strategic business partners in the WAN Shaping the Future of the Newspaper project:
PubliGroupe, the Swiss-based international advertising and promotion group;
MAN Roland, a leading company for newspaper production systems; UPM-Kymmene, one of the world's leading printing paper producers; Unisys, a leading supplier of mission-critical solutions, services and innovative technology to the publishing industry; Telenor, the leading Norwegian
telecommunications, IT and media group; and Samsung Electronics, a global
leader in semiconductor, telecommunication, and digital convergence

represents 18,000 newspapers; its membership includes 72 national newspaper associations, individual newspaper executives in 100 countries, 13 news agencies and nine regional and world-wide press groups.

Ifra is a service organisation dedicated to the publishing industry
worldwide. More than 2000 publishing companies and suppliers to the
publishing industry are currently Ifra members.
