Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta (El Santo)’s 99th Birthday

Today we’re celebrating what would have been the 99th birthday of the man credited with popularizing wrestling in Mexico, the one and only Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta. More commonly known as “El Santo” (The Saint), this legendary, silver-masked luchador wrestled for nearly five decades and is remembered as one of the greatest sports figures in Mexican history. Through his appearance in film and as the subject of many comic books, he became a cultural icon, representing justice and the fight against evil.

Legend has it that El Santo never removed his silver mask even at home and had a special mask for eating. He went to great lengths to protect his identity, particularly when traveling. He finally removed his mask to reveal his identity on the Mexican talk show, Contrapunto. A week after his unmasking, El Santo died on February 5, 1984. His funeral was one of the biggest in Mexican history, attended by family, friends, and his many fans. Shortly thereafter, a statue of El Santo was erected in his hometown of Tulancingo.

Per his wishes, El Santo was buried wearing his iconic silver mask.

Credited with popularizing the Mexican sport of lucha libre wrestling, the legendary wrestler would have been 99 years old today.

Following its doodle to mark the first day of fall, Google has replaced its logo again today with a doodle to honor Mexican wrestler Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta on what would have been the luchador’s 99th birthday.

Known as El Santo in the ring, Huerta is credited with making the Mexican sport of lucha libre wrestling so popular.

“More commonly known as ‘El Santo’ (The Saint), this legendary, silver-masked luchador wrestled for nearly five decades and is remembered as one of the greatest sports figures in Mexican history,” reports the Google Doodle Blog.

Google says the wrestler kept his famous silver mask on throughout his career to hide his identity, removing it only once during an appearance on the Mexican talk show Contrapunto. He would die five days later at the age of 67, on February 5, 1984.

The doodle includes a slide show of the following images honoring the silver-masked wrestler and links to “El Santo” search results.

Google is displaying the doodle on its US home page, as well as on home pages across Central America and most countries in South America, along with a handful of other international pages.

Australia To Make Google, Facebook Pay Media Outlets - May 2020

The government has now asked the country’s competition watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to frame a mandatory code of conduct between media outlets and digital platforms after talks stalled on content payment rules.

SYDNEY – Australia will force Facebook Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google to share advertising revenue with local media firms, the country’s treasurer said on Monday, becoming one of the first countries to require digital platforms to pay for content they use.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the move comes after talks with Facebook and Alphabet failed to yield a voluntary code to address complaints by domestic media players that the tech giants have too tight a grip on advertising, their main source of income.

“We understand the challenge that we face, this is a big mountain to climb,” Frydenberg told reporters in Canberra. “These are big companies that we are dealing with but there is also so much at stake, so we’re prepared for this fight.”

The government has now asked the country’s competition watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to frame a mandatory code of conduct between media outlets and digital platforms after talks stalled on content payment rules.

The government scrapped its initial plan to come up with a voluntary code by November and has asked ACCC to submit its draft mandatory code by July, to be passed into legislation shortly thereafter, the treasurer said.

Frydenberg said the mandatory code will include sharing of data, ranking and display of news content and the sharing of revenue generated from news, adding that it would also establish penalty and binding dispute resolution mechanisms.

Australia’s online advertising market is worth about almost A$9 billion ($5.72 billion) a year and has grown more than eight-fold since 2005.

For every A$100 spent on online advertising in Australia, excluding classifieds, nearly a third goes to Google and Facebook, an ACCC report on digital platforms published in June last year showed.

Last December, Australia said Google and Facebook would have to agree to new rules to ensure they do not abuse their market power and damage competition, or the government would impose new controls.

Facebook expressed dismay at the government move on Monday.

“We’re disappointed by the government’s announcement, especially as we’ve worked hard to meet their agreed deadline,” Facebook said.

“We’ve invested millions of dollars locally to support Australian publishers through content arrangements, partnerships and training for the industry,” Facebook Australia and New Zealand Managing Director Will Easton said in an emailed statement.

Google said it would continue to cooperate with plans for the media code of conduct.

“We have sought to work constructively with industry, the ACCC and government to develop a code of conduct, and we will continue to do so in the revised process set out by the Government today,” a Google spokesperson said.

Monday’s move also comes as the new coronavirus pandemic hits Australia’s media business hard, with several regional outlets reporting steep declines in advertising revenue.

Pending the new code, the federal government last week unveiled a support package for the local media businesses including a 12-month waiver of spectrum tax for commercial television and radio broadcasters, and a A$50 million public interest news gathering programme.

Google Wins Case Against French Government - July 2017

 

Google has won a significant legal challenge against efforts by the French government to recover 1.1 billion ($A1.63 billion) in back taxes.

At issue was the tech firm's use of its Irish subsidiary to book revenues it gained in France between 2005 and 2010.

It was accused by the authorities of using an illegal loophole to escape higher corporate taxes but the French court ruled Google Ireland Limited was not taxable in the country.

It represents a blow to the French authorities who had vowed to secure a big sum from Google by applying the law after the UK negotiated a deal.

It was announced in January last year that the company would pay 130 million ($A218 million) in back-taxes to HM Revenue Customs at an effective tax rate of 3%.

That deal - heavily criticised by Labour and other political opponents as too low - was hailed a 'major success' by-then Chancellor George Osborne, who argued the multi-national firm was among many paying nothing when he took office.

Italy got more - 272 million ($A457 million) - when it held similar negotiations with Google this year.

The Paris court ruling was seen as damaging the ambition of new French President Emmanuel Macron to hold major international firms to account for any cheating.

It was also potentially damaging to a separate tax fraud investigation in France against Google, which - like rivals - has faced regulatory scrutiny over activities in the wider EU.

Just last month, the European Commission ordered it to pay a record fine of 2.1 billion ($A3.5 billion) for abusing its dominance as a search engine to boost its shopping comparison service.

Google responded by saying it 'respectfully disagreed' with the ruling and would consider an appeal.

Last year, European competition chief Margrethe Vestager ordered Apple to repay 11 billion ($A18.5 billion) in back taxes in Ireland - a verdict that prompted both the company and country to appeal.
