Mining magnate Gina Rinehart pulls $15 million netball
sponsorship amid 'virtue signalling' accusations -
22nd October 2022

Elite
netball in Australia is once again on the brink of
collapse after mining magnate Gina Rinehart announced
she was pulling her proposed $15 million sponsorship
of the organisation and its elite squad, the Diamonds.
In
a statement released early on Saturday afternoon,
the company took a swipe at Netball Australia, saying
it didn't want to add to their "disunity problems",
and announced they would withdraw the proposal "effective
immediately".
They
will, however, still offer a four-month sponsorship
while the organisation finds a replacement.
"Hancock
and Roy Hill do not wish to add to Netball's disunity
problems, and accordingly Hancock has advised Netball
Australia (the governing body of netball in Australia)
that it has withdrawn from its proposed partnership
effective immediately," the statement read.
Further
down the statement, the company also took a swipe
at environmentalists it claims "neglect"
the truth.
"Mining
is critical to securing the minerals essential for
everyday life," it read.
"An
often conveniently neglected truth when activists
talk emotively about mining is that most, if not all,
of the primary products required for the equipment,
production, distribution and delivery of renewable
energy depend on resources that need to be mined."
The
?Diamonds players released a joint statement in which
the cohort expressed its disappointment over the withdrawal.
"We
are disappointed to learn that Hancock Prospecting
has withdrawn their sponsorship offer," the statement
read, in part.
"As
Netball Australia has emphasised, these funds go towards
the Diamonds high performance and underpinning programs,
something that is of critical importance to us."
The
players also denied reports of a protest and a split
within the cohort.
"The
singular issue of concern to the players was one of
support for our only indigenous team member,"
the statement read.
"We
are fully committed to the Diamonds' Sisters in Arms
legacy and the values this represents, alongside Australian
Netball's Declaration of Commitment." ?
Netball
Australia chair Wendy Archer said the decision was
a disappointing outcome for the sport.
"This
has been a challenging period for all involved and
while every effort has been made from all parties
to resolve the issues surrounding the sensitivities
of the partnership, unfortunately we have not been
able to achieve a mutually satisfactory outcome,"
she said.
Archer
said the organisation would "reassess its funding
options" ?before making a decision on the four-month
sponsorship offer.
In
a separate statement released at the same time, Hancock
took a broader swipe at sports stars speaking up about
their own concerns regarding sustainability of sponsors.?
"It
is unnecessary for sports organisations to be used
as the vehicle for social or political causes,"
the other statement read.
"Sport
is at its best when it is focused on good and fair
competition, with dedicated athletes striving for
excellence to achieve their sporting dreams and to
represent our country at their very best.
"There
are more targeted and genuine ways to progress social
or political causes without virtue signaling or for
self-publicity."
In
a team meeting earlier this month, Indigenous shooter
Donnell Wallam - who is set to make her Diamonds debut
against England at the end of the month - spoke about
her desire to not wear the Hancock logo, ?given its
founder Lang Hancock's - Rinehart's father - 1984
proposal that some Indigenous people be sterilised
to "breed themselves out".
Her
teammates reportedly stood with her, declaring they
would not let her look any different from them on
her debut in the green and gold dress.
The
Diamonds have played by the motto 'sisters in arms'
for the past decade.
The
Diamonds have not worn the Hancock logo during the
ongoing Constellation ?Cup against New Zealand.
In
the statement, Hancock said it "would only ever
want athletes to wear the Hancock logo if the athletes
were proud to do so", but then denied reports
the players had refused to wear the logo.
Cricket
Australia this week announced it would end its partnership
with Alinta Energy at the end of the contract period
next June, amid claims chief executive Nick Hockley
had been pressured to do so by skipper Pat Cummins.
In
their own statement, Cricket Australia denied those
claims.
In
a media conference on Tuesday morning announcing his
appointment as Australia's new one-day international
captain, Cummins backed down from those comments suggesting
the story was "a stretch".
Hancock
continues to sponsor the Australian swim team and
Rowing Australia.

Netball
Australia. Well documented slogan... "Go Woke,
Go Broke". In this case it may be a prophecy.
Any diamonds in the rough yet? Diamonds are rolling
around and scattered. This is the most publicity Australian
Netball has ever received in Australia down under
ever, to the best of my knowledge, so that says it
all! Any publicity is good publicity (but the exception
proves the rule)! I know plenty of other sports teams
and other worthy causes that could do with a cash
injection and/or sponsorship Gina and Hancock Prospecting.
It's the business of sport and professional sport,
so the powers that be and team should treat it professionally.
I'm a tree hugger at heart - aren't we all, and I
get a bit torn on the mining sector at times, but
it's a business that helps keep Australia strong.
An old sports broadcasting legend, Mean Gene Okerlund
of WWF (WWE) fame said back in 1984 while ringside
at Madison Square Garden, New York, during an 'Iron
Sheik' (Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri) match, "Politics
and sports, athletics, do not mix"! Still holds
true to a large degree. Readers can decide who did
the fowl. GR already did!

News Australia: If video killed the radio star then
has the internet terminated the TV host?
If
video killed the radio star then has the internet
terminated the TV host?
The
availability of information online has pulled eyeballs
away from the most coveted spots on Australias
free-to-air channels.
According
to data from OzTam, the breakfast TV slot has seen
huge drops in audience numbers, with average weekday
metro numbers at Seven Network's Sunrise down by 28%.
Interestingly,
the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)s
News Breakfast has seen a steady rise of viewers during
the last decade.
Across
the board TV viewership has massively dropped. Sevens
average all-day audience is down by 24% while Nines
fell by 28%. Network 10's all-day viewership sunk
38% in the past decade, while the ABC shed 22% of
its daily average metro audience since 2011.
Is
this change reflected in your house? Do you find yourself
in front of the telly of a morning watching Karl Stefanovic
or the Cash Cow, perhaps youve found greener
pastures elsewhere? Let us know in the comments.

News has become the online go-to for me in news coverage,
along with LinkedIn News Australia. Many moons ago
I worked directly in the Australian subscriber television
business for Optus Vision for years, specializing
in PPV, sports, bundling, ethnic channels and retention.
I stopped watching terrestrial television and nightly
news years ago. Can't be too many Aussie's watching
anymore. I bet a good percentage have ended up on
LinkedIn News, as I have. YouTube has a good offering
of channels and balance of viewpoints also, without
bombarding the consumer with advertising. LinkedIn
News wins our Media Man "News Aggregator Of The
Month' award again! Google News is runner-up. And
Elon Musk and Twitter remain one of the biggest news
media stories in Australia and globally. Netball Australia
is the biggest sports related news story by all accounts,
and because they lost a $15 million dollar sponsorship
deal from Hancock Prospecting. It's cliché,
but "Go Woke, Go Broke". Almost as popular
as the motorsport and politically inspired "Let's
Go"! Thanks to research from LI's John C. Abell
and associates. Tune back in again tomorrow if you
like. The 24/7/365 news cycle continues!

Let's Go Surfing In-text
advertising In-text
advertising is a form of contextual advertising where specific keywords within
the text of a web-page are matched with advertising and/or related information
units. Description Although
contextual advertising in general refers to the inclusion of advertisements adjacent
to relevant online context (e.g., Google AdSense), in-text advertising places
hyperlinks directly into the text of the webpage. In-text advertising is commonly
available from In-Text Ad Networks like Kontera using technology such as IntelliTXT,
or offered by publishers using Ad Serving technology from PowerLinks Media. Advertising
Model In
text advertising commonly works on a cost per click (CPC) model, which means that
each time a website visitor clicks on an In-text ad, the websites owner gets paid
by the advertiser. Other models include cost per impression (CPM), cost per action
CPA and cost per play CPP for multimedia content ads (also known as Pay Per Play
(PPP) (Wikipedia) Contextual
advertising
Contextual
advertising is a form of targeted advertising for advertisements appearing on
websites or other media, such as content displayed in mobile browsers. The advertisements
themselves are selected and served by automated systems based on the identity
of the user and the content displayed.
Pay-per-click Pay-per-click
(PPC), also known as cost per click (CPC), is an internet advertising model used
to direct traffic to websites, in which an advertiser pays a publisher (typically
a website owner or a network of websites) when the ad is clicked. Pay-per-click
is commonly associated with first-tier search engines (such as Google AdWords
and Microsoft Bing Ads). With search engines, advertisers typically bid on keyword
phrases relevant to their target market. In contrast, content sites commonly charge
a fixed price per click rather than use a bidding system. PPC "display"
advertisements, also known as "banner" ads, are shown on web sites with
related content that have agreed to show ads and are typically not pay-per-click
advertising. Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter have also adopted pay-per-click
as one of their advertising models. However,
websites can offer PPC ads. Websites that utilize PPC ads will display an advertisement
when a keyword query matches an advertiser's keyword list that has been added
in different ad groups, or when a content site displays relevant content. Such
advertisements are called sponsored links or sponsored ads, and appear adjacent
to, above, or beneath organic results on search engine results pages, or anywhere
a web developer chooses on a content site. The
PPC advertising model is open to abuse through click fraud, although Google and
others have implemented automated systems] to guard against abusive clicks by
competitors or corrupt web developers. (Wikipedia)
