Rudd,
Hockey on hand to turn NRLs Las Vegas play into
reality - January 25, 2024
The
NRLs Las Vegas season-opener is expected to
go ahead as planned, with executives at the sports
governing body planning to lean on the expertise of
three former politicians to expedite a visa process
for players.
The
four NRL clubs that will travel to the United States
to compete in the Las Vegas double-header on March
2 have been at loggerheads with the Australian Rugby
League Commission over delays to crucial matters such
as accommodation, visas and funds for offshore training
camps.
But an urgent meeting on Thursday between the clubs,
NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo and Australian Rugby
League Commission chairman Peter Vlandys ended
with an agreement to hand the South Sydney Rabbitohs,
Sydney Roosters, Manly Sea Eagles and the Brisbane
Broncos $700,000 each in funding for pre-season training
camps and unlimited insurance for serious injuries.
They have also been given assurances that all visas
and accommodation issues will be resolved.
Weve
got the comfort and satisfaction that we needed to
make sure that its going to be a success. From
now on, its full steam ahead, Rabbitohs
chief executive Blake Solly said. What Peter
and Andrew said today is theyre very confident
that all players will get access to the US, which
is really important to the game. We want to see the
best players on the field.
The
NRLs Las Vegas play is the brainchild of Mr
Vlandys and is based on concerns the game cant
sustain revenue growth by relying on local broadcast
revenue, advertising sponsorship and wagering turnover.
But
the process has been arduous and expensive. The Sydney
Morning Herald reported earlier this week that the
four clubs had written to Mr Vlandys expressing
concerns about a lack of information regarding visas,
medical insurance, Las Vegas training venues and fast
rising costs.
There
was a degree of frustration about some of the things
and issues we were raising and couldnt get a
resolution, Mr Solly said on Thursday. Peter
understood our concerns, and he understood some of
the challenges Andrew has faced, and he was able to
bulldoze through them.
The
NRL initially told the clubs players could travel
to the US with visa waiver available for Australian
travellers. Clubs were concerned about players being
stopped by US customs, particularly those who had
been arrested in Australia such as Payne Haas, Latrell
Mitchell and Reece Walsh.
Mr
Vlandys will rely on Australian Turf Club chairman
Peter McGauran, a friend and former Howard government
minister, to expedite the visa process. Mr McGauran
is a former consul-general and senior trade investment
commissioner to Texas and currently works for Bondi
Partners, the advisory and investment firm run by
former treasurer Joe Hockey.
The
NRL also plans to lean on Kevin Rudd, the Australian
ambassador in Washington DC, and Mr Hockey to expedite
the process.
Mr
Solly said the clubs had received assurances that
players would be able to get visas approved. Players
who have not been arrested previously will enter the
US on a waiver, while the others will apply for a
visitor visa.
Theyre
working with the consulate and government to make
sure that process is expedited as quickly as can be,
he said. Based on what we agreed today, we should
be fine to sign the [final] agreement and get on with
it.
To
make sure players are prepared to play in US conditions,
the four clubs will base themselves in Los Angeles,
San Diego and Las Vegas for more than a week before
kick-off. The NRL agreed on Thursday to provide $175,000
per club towards the cost of that week.
This
is an investment right now for the future, Mr
Abdo said.
Having
said that, were not approaching this expecting
massive losses. Weve already started building
revenue streams, weve got investment from sponsors,
weve sold a number of tickets.

UFC ANNOUNCES STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP WITH NRL AS THE
AUSSIE FOOTBALL CODE LAUNCHES VEGAS MISSION
Ultimate
Fighting Championship Joins Forces With World's Premier
Rugby League Competition
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has today joined
forces with the worlds premier rugby league
competition, National Rugby League (NRL) to launch
the sporting organizations first Las Vegas venture.
Four
of the Australian competitions flagship clubs
- South Sydney Rabbitohs, Brisbane Broncos, Manly
Sea Eagles and Sydney Roosters - will play in the
Vegas showpiece to kick-off the 2024 NRL Premiership
season at Allegiant Stadium on March 2.
The
historic NRL double-header fixture will be the first
played on U.S. soil and today, UFC Senior Executive
Vice President Lawrence Epstein, Executive Vice President
Dave Shaw and Hall of Fame athlete Forrest Griffin
welcomed NRL officials and star players from the four
clubs to the fight capital of the world.
The
new partnership will see UFC build upon its already
strong links with NRL to reach thousands of potential
new fans in the Asia Pacific region, where the sport
of MMA continues to experience exponential growth.
The NRL is hoping to tap into UFCs pulling power
in the U.S. market to expand its own global footprint.
UFC
announces strategic partnership with NRL as the Aussie
football code launches Vegas mission
Las Vegas is on the fast track to becoming the
sports capital of the world. All the major U.S. sports
leagues will have a presence here soon, and of course,
Las Vegas will host its first Super Bowl here at Allegiant
Stadium in February, said UFC Senior Executive
Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Lawrence
Epstein.
International
sports leagues are also recognizing the value Las
Vegas can bring to their brand. Just a few weeks ago
we had the inaugural Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix,
which was a great success and set the stage for additional
F1 events in the years to come.
NRL
fans are going to love coming to Vegas to watch these
matches. We've been to all the great cities, and there's
nothing like the infrastructure we have here in Las
Vegas - from hotel rooms to restaurants and night
clubs, and all of the other entertainment and sports
we have here. Fans are the most important component
of the sports ecosystem, and when the fans have a
great time, they talk about your brand more, they
talk about the experience more, and that positivity
just builds up, said Epstein.

UFC Vice President, Head of International & Content
Dave Shaw said the two organizations have enjoyed
close ties over many years.
There
is a great link between our two sports, and I am excited
about this partnership and the opportunities we have
to grow together, said Shaw.
We
know the NRL is one of the biggest sporting competitions
Down Under and they have aspirations to grow their
sport here in the U.S. We also know Australians are
some of the biggest MMA fans on the planet - it is
home to over 4 million of our 700 million global fanbase
- and we are always looking at ways to continue to
grow that fanbase in the APAC region.
Since
2010, UFC has accomplished major milestones across
Australia and New Zealand, delivering 20 events across
most major cities, many of them record-breaking.
We
have seen UFC athletes like Alex Volkanovski and Tai
Bam Bam Tuivasa start their careers in
rugby league before transitioning to MMA... and weve
also seen plenty of NRL stars enjoying the action
at our UFC events across the globe. There is a connection
between the sports that transcends beyond the Octagon
and that is what excites us about this partnership.
