Family History

Peter McLernon was born in Perth, Western Australia on 1st September 1951 into a family of six children. His family has had a long association with the West Australian Police Force. Peter's grandfather (Hugh McLernon deceased) was a former Deputy Commissioner, well known as head of the gold stealing prevention squad in the early days of the Goldfields development of Western Australia. Peter's father (John McLernon deceased ) spent many years as a Detective in Perth and retired from the WA Police Force having attained the rank of Inspector. Peter's older brother Hugh McLernon carried on the family involvement with the law as a former crown prosecutor and barrister and is now Executive Director of Insolvency Management Fund (Australia ) Ltd. Another brother, Terrence McLernon, is the author of two books on culture and corruption in business circles in Western Australia.

Military Service

Peter's father, John, served with the Royal Australian Engineers in New Guinea in the defence of Australia during the 2nd world war and Peter served with the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment on active duty in Vietnam. Peter also served as a Federal Police Officer for a period after his return from service in Vietnam. He was also an active member of the Vietnam Veterans association of Australia, for several years serving on the West Australian committee.

Business Experience

Peter has had a long association with small business development in Western Australia as a manager or principal culminating in the establishment of the McLernon Group of companies in 2000. Throughout most of this time Peter has been a licensed second hand dealer or auctioneer. He established, built and sold McLernon's commercial Trading Co. in Northbridge and Direct Office Furniture in West Perth. Both businesses went on to many years of successful operation. Peter was also Managing Director of The Life Insurance Policy Exchange and Countrywide Credit. Both finance companies were owned in partnership by Danny Hill and Hugh McLernon. Peter worked from both the Perth and Sydney offices of the companies. The Life Insurance Policy Exchange was the first company in Australia to purchase life insurance policies, convert them to investment policies and sell them to major superannuation funds. Countrywide Credit was the only private mortgage company in Western Australia not to be embroiled in the Finance Broking scandal that engulfed the finance industry during Peter's term as Managing Director of the company.

Community Service

Peter has also served as a City Councillor for five years with Melville City Council, one of Australia's leading Local Governments. Peter and Dianne have been married for thirty eight years and have raised four children. The McLernon Group are "community partners" of the School Volunteer Program Inc. in Western Australia and authorised representatives for WA No Interest Loans Network Inc.
