Organisers of a rally to prevent
a major development on the Airlie Beach lagoon
say almost 2,000 people attended Saturday's protest.
Suzette
Pelt from the Save Our Foreshore residents action
group says she hopes the public display sends
a clear message to the Whitsunday Shire Council
that the community does not want to lose access
to the lagoon.
"The
community is right behind us. The community doesn't
want this type of development on the foreshore
and we definitely had over 1,000 people there,"
she said.
"The
police estimated that it could have even been
up to about 1,800 people and if that's the case,
that represents about 10 per cent of the Whitsunday
Shire population."
