The
UFC has booked Etihad Stadium to host a UFC 193 pay-per-view
event on Nov. 14 in Melbourne, Australia.
UFC
officials confirmed the news to ESPN.com on Wednesday.
The event will actually take place on Nov. 15 in Australia,
in order to maintain the usual pay-per-view start
time in the U.S.
A
previously announced welterweight title fight between
Robbie Lawler (26-10) and Carlos Condit (30-8) will
headline the stadium event. A heavyweight rematch
between Mark Hunt (10-10-1) and Antonio Silva (19-7-1)
has been scheduled as the co-main event.
A
middleweight contender's bout between Michael Bisping
(27-7) and Robert Whittaker (14-4) has also been scheduled
for the Australian card.
"There's
been a lot of talk about Melbourne, title fights and
stadium shows," UFC president Dana White said
in a statement. "The UFC is doing all three at
the Etihad Stadium in front of 70,000 people."
Etihad
Stadium's capacity is near 55,000, and it plays host
to the Australian Football League. The record for
largest audience at a UFC event is 55,724, which was
set at UFC 129 on April 30, 2011 at Rogers Centre
in Toronto. It will mark the second UFC stadium card
this year. A January event at Tele2 Arena in Stockholm
drew a reported attendance of 30,000.
The
Nov. 14 event will mark the UFC's first in Melbourne.
The Victorian Government lifted a ban on mixed martial
arts taking place in a cage earlier this year.
Lawler,
33, will seek his second title defense against Condit.
The American Top Team product is coming off a grueling
TKO win against Rory MacDonald at UFC 189 in July.
