New
York, Atlantic City, Meadowlands...
Atlantic
City casinos are facing threats on multiple fronts
from new competitors not just in New York, but from
within their own state.
Thats
not great news for a seaside resort in which the amount
of money won from in-person gamblers continues to
lag, with seven of the nine casinos winning less from
on-premises customers than they did before the COVID-19
pandemic hit.
At
the East Coast Gaming Congress Thursday at the Hard
Rock casino, numerous executives from some of the
major casino companies in America acknowledged the
opportunity of three downstate New York casino licenses
and the risk they will present to Atlantic
City.
And
the operator of a racetrack in northern New Jersey,
just outside New York City, told media he believes
New Jersey voters will authorize construction of a
casino in the Meadowlands shortly after New York casinos
open and New Jersey gamblers tire of paying bridge
tolls and sitting in traffic to get to gambling halls
in New York.
Now
more than ever we know theres a threat coming
with New York City gaming coming, Atlantic City
Mayor Marty Small said at the conference. We
understand the threat. We want to continue to work
together to do things right to put Atlantic City into
a prime position, no matter where these casinos are,
that we diversify our options.
Jim
Allen, chairman of Hard Rock International, is straddling
both markets.
His
company operates a casino in Atlantic City that is
the second-most successful in the market. And Hard
Rock is partnering with New York Mets owner Steve
Cohen on a proposed $8 billion casino complex at Citi
Field in the citys Queens section.
If
as many as three casino open in or close to New York
City, Allen said, Atlantic Citys in-person gambling
revenues could fall by 20% to 30%.
We
have to be prepared for that, he told attendees
at the conference.
Allen
said Atlantic Citys Hard Rock will weather the
storm of New York competition. But he said he does
not want to see any competitors in the city close,
throwing 2,000 to 3,000 people out of work in a repetition
of a wave of casino closings in Atlantic City from
2014 to 2016 that saw five casinos close. Two have
since reopened under new ownership.
Tom
Reeg. CEO of Caesars Entertainment, which owns three
of Atlantic Citys nine casinos, also said New
York casinos will be a challenge. His company, too,
is seeking a New York casino license with SL Green,
and Roc Nation in Times Square.
Were
pursuing that license with fervor, Reeg said.
I share Jims concern about where the (Atlantic
City) market is headed as we head into New York.
Soo
Kim, chairman of Ballys Corporation, which has
a casino in Atlantic City, said table games revenue
from New York gamblers will be harder to attract
once casinos open in New York City. With casinos
in New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware, theres
casinos everywhere.
He
said New Jersey can rely on its robust internet gambling
market to offset some expected losses.
Concerns
dont end with New York.
Jeff
Gural runs the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford,
New Jersey, just outside New York City, along with
the Tioga Downs and Vernon Downs racetrack casinos
in upstate New York.
He
also has a deal with Hard Rock to build a casino at
the Meadowlands Racetrack a proposal that was
put on the back burner when New Jersey voters overwhelmingly
rejected a referendum on expanding casino gambling
beyond Atlantic City in 2016.
Im
just waiting for New York to open, Gural said
in an interview. People will say, Why
am I driving over the George Washington Bridge and
paying an $18 toll and sitting in traffic to go gamble?
Gural
said the 2016 referendum failed largely because it
was written to permit more than one casino in northern
New Jersey without specifying where.
People
dont want a casino in the neighborhood,
Gural said. If we make it clear its only
at the Meadowlands, common sense tells you there will
be a casino in the Meadowlands.
Gural
said that will happen in a lot sooner than 10
years.
Mark
Giannantonio, president of Atlantic Citys Resorts
casino and of the Casino Association of New Jersey,
said during Wednesdays opening day session of
the convention that Atlantic City views New York casinos
as a threat.
New
Jersey has to be prepared for this, to make Atlantic
City more attractive for people to visit, and theres
a lot of work to do, he said. Table games
clearly will be impacted.
He
said Atlantic City has a two-year window
to prepare for New York competition by cleaning itself
up, improving its infrastructure, and assigning more
police to the Boardwalk and other areas so visitors
see a visible law enforcement presence. He also said
Atlantic City needs to solve its problem with homelessness.
But
Giannantonio said Atlantic City can survive the advent
of new competition in an already cutthroat northeastern
casino market.
Im
always going to rely on hotel, entertainment, retail
and the experience on the casino floor, he said.
I believe in my heart that Atlantic City, with
some hard work, will be an opportunity. Were
excited about the future.

Almost
half of NSW venues found to have removed gambling
related signage well ahead of 1 September ban
31st
July 2023
The
NSW government says almost half of the states
licensed venues have already taken measures to comply
with new laws banning the use of external gambling
related signage before they officially come into effect
on 1 September.
Originally
announced in May, the ban relates to any external
signage that indicates the presence of poker machines
inside a venue, including the use of names such as
VIP Room, VIP Lounge, Golden Room, Players Lounge
and more all terms typically used to reference
the presence of poker machines plus imagery
such as dragons, coins or lightning motifs.
Venues
found breaking the signage law after it comes into
effect will face fines of up to AU$11,000 (US$7,300)
per offence.
Providing
an update on Friday, the NSW state government said
inspectors from Liquor & Gaming NSW have engaged
with 530 venues to provide education and support around
their obligations. Of those, 215 are already complying
with the new requirements ahead of the 1 September
deadline.
Its
great to see industry and government working together
to prevent and reduce gambling harm in the community,
said Minister for Gaming & Racing, David Harris.
We
announced these changes back in May as a staged approach
to ensure pubs and clubs were given the appropriate
amount of time to conceal, remove and switch off any
gambling promoting signage.
While
venues have until 1 September to comply, our expectation
is that they remove signs as quickly as possible and
not leave it until the last minute.
Removing
this signage is just one important part of our commitment
to gambling reform to reduce harm and tackle money
laundering head on in NSW, and we are delivering.
The
removal of gambling related signage is one of a raft
of gambling reforms introduced across NSW in recent
months, with the state government having also announced
a reduction in the cash input limit for all new electronic
gaming machines from $5,000 to $500, a ban on political
donations from clubs involved in gaming, the introduction
of Responsible Gaming Officers at venues with more
than 20 machines, expansion of a third-party exclusion
register to the whole state and the establishment
of an independent panel of expert stakeholders to
oversee the cashless gaming trial and recommend an
implementation roadmap for gaming reforms.

The
plan for a downtown Chicago casino now has a surprising
ally: river lovers
Chicagos
push for a casino has stirred fervent debate focused
mostly on the predictable: whether the right site
was chosen, how much tax revenue it will generate
and whether it will worsen noise, traffic or problem
gambling. But river advocates and ecological preservationists
see the complex in a different light. To them, the
Ballys plan to replace the Tribune printing

in the ongoing makeover of the citys riverfront

Ontario: More staff back, but border issues continue
to be a challenge for Caesars Windsor

workers at Caesars voted 93 per cent in favour of
a new three-year collective agreement, covering the
roughly 1,800 workers at the casino. With restrictions
related to COVID-19 mostly lifted, one of the remaining
issues involves the border and being able to get more
visitors from the US back.

Las Vegas resident Mark Wahlberg promises Hollywood

Nevada
(Las Vegas) - John Katsilometes, Review-Journal -
Mark Wahlberg is not moving to Las Vegas. He already
has. We need to shift to the present-tense when referring
to Vegas plans for the Hollywood A-lister, who has
purchased a two-story estate in The Summit Club for
$14.5 million. My hometown, is how Wahlberg
referred to Las Vegas in the latest episode of BeondTVs
Lights, Camera, Vegas, hosted by Rachel
Smith. I live in Nevada. I plan on making, hopefully,
a film studio, and we want to build a shoe factory
in Nevada. We want to create a lot of jobs,
and a lot of excitement. Hollywood 2.0.
Summer tourism profitable despite nagging inflation
New
Jersey (Atlantic City) - Eric Conklin, The Press -
Between Atlantic and Cape May counties, tourism officials
say the summer season may not have been as hindered
by inflation as was feared months ago. I think
the summer was strong, said Michael Chait, president
of the Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce.
Cape May County tourism director Diane Wieland said,
This year, as we went into it, we kind of predicted
that things were not going to be as great, but it
was still going to be good, Wieland said. Wieland
said beach badge sales and occupancy tax collections
two revenue streams the county uses to gauge
its tourism economy were slightly down from
a year ago 2021 but remain strong.

Changes make Colorado an enticing casino market
Colorado
(Black Hawk/Cripple Creek) - Howard Stutz, The Nevada
Independent - Nevadas major gaming companies
avoided Colorado for nearly two decades after casinos
were legalized in the historic mining towns of Black
Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek. Initially, bets
in the state were limited to $5 and casinos were not
open 24/7
There was zero interest by Las Vegas
or Reno casino operators to enter Colorado. Expansion
from tiny storefront casinos to mid-sized resorts
has been taking place over the last few years. In
Black Hawk, three properties account for more than
1,300 hotel rooms, roughly 85 percent of the total
market. In Cripple Creek, a 300-room hotel-casino
that is being built by Las Vegas-based Full House
Resorts will double the market size when it opens
next year. Las Vegas and Reno gaming companies committed
millions of dollars to change the perception of the
Colorado casino communities.

as much about rearranging the layout at North Americas

top executive said Thursday. "The thought is
to create a vibrant hub of activity in the heart of
the property, Jason Guyot, president and chief
executive officer, said in a phone interview. "Were
spread out so far, from the Rainmaker Casino on one
side to The Fox Tower on the other side, its
difficult for guests to manage. Theres no better
place to put it (a new gaming space) than Grand Pequot,
the busiest section of the property - the heartbeat
of the property. Guyot said the new gaming space,
which will replace the Grand Ballroom, will have around
500 slots, including 175 high-limit machines, and
24 table games, including the usual mix of blackjack,
roulette, craps and the like, as well as a 40-seat
bar.

Thai - a fun new promotional campaign from the
e-gaming affiliate program, Euro Partners.
The
promotion, which targets both new and existing Euro
Partners members, challenges affiliates to compete
for the largest percentage of increased traffic over
a two-month period across the programs three
verticals - casino, poker and sports-betting. As the
title suggests, the first place winner will receive
an all-expense paid, seven-day trip for two to a luxurious
holiday resort in Thailand.
E-gaming affiliates are very much characterized
by their work hard - play hard mentality,
says Davin Jacobson, Euro Partners Head of Affiliation.
We wanted to create a promotion that would appeal
to that unique sensibility and pleasantly remind our
affiliates why they chose to get into this industry
in the first place.
Affiliates
of all levels stand a fair chance of winning, as the
competition measures improvement by relative percentage
as opposed to total increased conversion. Participants
can check their status on the My Thai leaderboard,
which will be updated bi-weekly until the promotion
ends on December 17th.
