JAMES Packer's $1.5 billion Barangaroo casino resort will stand 270m high if it wins approval, becoming Sydney's tallest landmark after Sydney Tower, documents reveal.

The plans also show a new pier would be built over the Harbour at Barangaroo for an "innovation centre".

The foreshore area in front of the resort would be widened and at least 50 per cent of the Barangaroo South precinct would be developed as public space.

Mr Packer's Crown Resorts is now working to obtain the planning approvals necessary to build what it promises to be an "iconic" tower designed to capture global attention.

Crown has previously indicated the tower would stand about 250m tall and the proposed increase may trigger opposition from long-term opponents of the casino, including Sydney Mayor Clover Moore.
