I'm
often asked; What am I mainly working on, and on what
sectors of media, new media, promotion and such do
a see a future in?
Well,
it's a good question, and one that I think deserves
an answer.
Primarily
we're working on just about anything ethical that
we can see a dollar in!
The
future - well, that's not so easy to predict, but
here's a snapshot - media, new media and internet
publishing is here to stay. So is social media, for
better, or worse.
Niche
areas of specialty, be it in media, publishing, advertising,
sales, project management, talent management, or even
sometimes misunderstood areas such as Blockchain and
Bitcoin are all happening.
Fortunately,
the internet medium can act as an interface or meeting
place if you like, for most, if not all, of that above.
As
I'm covered in previous columns, the news media business
is ultra competitive. Ok, so you knew that already,
but hearing it again can only further substantiate
it. It's not like the wind is going to be blowing
in the other direction any time soon.
The
Media Man website network has lots of quality web
traffic. That is a valuable commodity. Websites are
akin to an artists black canvas.
The
business of currency...
Currency
is hear to stay, be it AUD, USD, EURO or even Bitcoin
or other crypto currencies.... just don't do too much
in China at present with crypto, for reasons well
documented in The Australian Financial Review, Wall
Street Journal and other business media publications.
Project
Management - the world needs management and direction!
Show
me a project, and I'll show you a reason to have it
managed. From art installations, to a national or
international media and advertising campaign, generally
these things do manage themselves. They require one
or more people to keep them on track.
Blockchain
- accountability of everything...
Straight
from the horses mouth (at Mr Wikipedia). Media Man
will be attending numerous Blockchain presentations
in Sydney. Only then will we start publishing in depth
articles on the topic. In the meantime, thank you
Wikipedia.
A
blockchain originally block chain is a
continuously growing list of records, called blocks,
which are linked and secured using cryptography. Each
block contains typically a hash pointer as a link
to a previous block, a timestamp and transaction data.
By design, blockchains are inherently resistant to
modification of the data. A blockchain is "an
open, distributed ledger that can record transactions
between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable
and permanent way."[8] For use as a distributed
ledger a blockchain is typically managed by a peer-to-peer
network collectively adhering to a protocol for validating
new blocks. Once recorded, the data in any given block
cannot be altered retroactively without the alteration
of all subsequent blocks, which needs a collusion
of the network majority.
Blockchains
are secure by design and are an example of a distributed
computing system with high Byzantine fault tolerance.
Decentralized consensus has therefore been achieved
with a blockchain. This makes blockchains potentially
suitable for the recording of events, medical records,
and other records management activities, such as identity
management, transaction processing, documenting provenance,
or food traceability.
Bitcoin
and other crypto currencies...
Bitcoin
is gold - literally. It's also highly volatile, and
one of the hottest business topics in the world. Crypto
currencies are also a leading searched topic in Google
and other search engines. The gaming sector has embraced
the currency, and various online based trading platforms
are getting in on the action.
Local
news / Local talent...
Some
of the biggest news stories in the world start off
as very small news items. Keep watching this space
here at Media Man (Int and Australia), and soon enough
you will join the dots and get the picture. Over a
decade plus I've worked on hundreds of campaigns.
Some start off very small, and have ended up going
national and then international - sometimes overnight.
You want names or proof? Ok, look up the likes of
Messages On Hold, Channel 31 Community TV, Githabul
People native title, Save Bondi Pavilion, Australian
Stunt Academy. Gladiators and John 'Vulcan' Seru,
WWE Australian Tour, Human Statue Bodyart, Ambush
Marketing, I.T. art mural, Sacha Banks art mural,
Domain #1 app, and I think I will stop the list here
for now.
Movies
anyone?
We
all enjoy a good movie. Now its just a matter of where
it appears, be it cinema, Google Play, Amazon, Netflix,
FOXTEL Now or somewhere else. Movies generally cost
lots of money to product and the producers, studios
and the like are looking for return on investment.
What's where the right media, promotion and advertising
come into play. Word of mouth is mega important, Rotten
Tomato's certainly means something also, but you need
to reach the masses. Many successful movie franchise
also branch out into gaming, collectibles, such as
figures, t-shirts etc. This strategy keeps the incoming
coming in, long after the movie premier was shown.
This is part of the sector of the success of Marvel
Studios and DC Comic's themed movies (via Warner Bros.).
See them all - collect the whole set. There's millions
of Fanboys and Fangirls that just need to see and
buy everything associates with the characters.
Hello
Sports fans...
Sports
fans are some of the most passionate people on the
planet. Witness UK and Italian soccer er football
fans. They travel long distances to see the games
live. Stay up all hours or the night to catch the
action on television, and sometimes are out of order
at stadiums. Sports fans spend big money, not only
on tickets but also merchandise. I've seen the merch
that WWE do at their live events and it's big numbers.
Over $500 for a replica WWE Championship title. Any
takers? Ok, $40 for Roman Empire (Roman Reigns) shirt
or a WWE Program is a bargain at just $20. A hotdog
at the arena is only $7 bucks. Combat sports: take
out a sub of Sho Boxing or UFC Fight Pass and you
can binge all you want for in the region of $10 a
month per brand. Sports fans love their sport on the
go via smartphone. You wouldn't want to miss a second
of the action would you.
Art
is luxury. Art is passion. Art is business...
Art
is anything you can get away with! Thanks to the late,
great Andy Warhol for that one. He also said of art:
Making
money is art and working is art and good business
is the best art.
Advertising
vs News?
The
Media Man crew prefers news to advertising. This quote
is just part of the reason why?
"Advertising
is the art of convincing people to spend money they
don't have for something they don't need." Will
Rogers
