has live entertainment Thursday to Sunday every week
showcasing bands and dj’s from a wide variety
of styles and genres. It also boasts a quaint rooftop
garden, 28 taps and some killer pub grub whilst being
one of Newton’s favourite dog friendly pubs.

it breeds and mingles there, but is often found performing
in other Sydney "hot spots" like The Tap
Gallery at Darlinghurst.
So,
what kind of people live, work and meet in Newtown?
Like anywhere, there is a mix. However its a given
that Newtown has one of the highest "arty types"
per capita than any other suburb in the land. It is
a magnet for unpretentious artists and creatives.
The atmosphere cultivates grass roots talent, rising
from the ground up literally. Perhaps you have seen
the short story teller, scribing and peddling his
wares on a milk crate backed up outside some bizarre
shop on King Street.
Much
could be learned from the way Newtown's creatives
support, contribute and entertain both their audience
and themselves, in a non "smart ass" way.
Newtown
is a place for the non-conforming - be it art, fashion,
personality, food, music, or any other commodity you
care to mention.
You
want names of some of Newtown's resident elite creative
types? How about Bryan Cutts (Merely Players), Huge
Olivero (artist) and Vera Dallas (artist).
So,
switch off the TV, and get yourself down to Newtown's
live entertainment venues, and support those who help
keep Newtown's arty, out of the box edge.
The
acts you support may not be selling out The Sydney
Entertainment Centre quite yet, but who's to say they
won't be one day. On the other hand, let's treasure
them as they are.
These
writers find it refreshing to hang out in Newtown
and not be judged by the label on their jeans and
shoes. We gravitate to the realness of people, whether
bums, barristers, bar tenders, "bare footers"
or professional entertainers.
