Rod, and any other staff and management at Rolling Stone

Rolling Stone magazine has been one of my favourite reads over the decades, and a number of years ago I even had the opportunity to work on a commercial project bearing the Rolling Stone named 'Rolling Stone' Covers at Shoalhaven City Arts Centre.

I'm hopeful that one this slow-ish news day that my opinion piece and 2 cents gets a guernsey, so here it is...

Despite a challenging media and publishing environment, I like millions no doubt, are extremely disappointed that the future of Rolling Stone is reported to be in jeopardy.

One may believe that the need for diversity and alternative press should be at an all time high. I'm not just stating that as a qualified journalist, who still works in media, but as a humanitarian as someone who believes strongly in human rights, including freedom of speech and "freedom of the press" - what's left of it.

A few questions that many work like answers to...

What department and individuals on Randwick City Council decided that as part of their cost cutting exercise they would cease ordering Rolling Stone Magazine for the Eastern Suburbs libraries?

How much money did it save the council, and at what economic, social and educational cost to the region - the students, the citizens who also believe in diversity in media?

Did Rolling Stone management themselves advise the libraries in this region, and any others, that they would no longer get hard copies delivered?

Has the decision to not even chase up and secure old (past copies from over the years and decades) got anything to do with media and personal interests of library or council staff? i.e. they do not find Rolling Stone of value or interesting enough to chase up past printed copies for library patrons?

Is council aware that Rolling Stone is one of the most referenced magazines in the world, and covers not only music and entertainment, but also politics, sports, social issues and popular culture across the board?

Has chasing up past hard copies of Rolling Stone been put in the too hard basket?

Did Rolling Stone's co-founder and publisher, Jann Wenner, do anything so bad, that it would scare off potential business partners from ensuring the print version survival of the pop culture media staple? Perhaps there is a PR version of what happened, and then there is a real / backroom story of what happened and went wrong along the line? (was the debunked campus rape story that was published a contributing factor of the print demise, or was it a contributing factor, to use that legal term?

Would the general consensus be that former Rolling Stone journalist, Hunter S. Thompson, was a necessary evil in the development of edgy and colourful journalism and reporting, or was he more of a scourge on the industry, and that Rolling Stone magazine kept publishing him, despite obvious over indulgence in illicit drugs, as he developed such a strong following that his articles would guarantee X amount of newsagency stand sales and subs?

Could my media rant be considered a watered down 'gonzo journalism' style, despite been penned while only under the influence of 2 cappuccinos, one from Nesto's Cafe on Anzac Parade, and the follow up from Morningshot Espresso Bar, located on the ground floor of Bowen Library, who were witness to part of my telephone call to the Southern Courier earlier today : ) lol

I would be interested to hear if the newspaper and magazine readership would consider Rolling Stone more or less bias than Australia's ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)? Note that I used to find the ABC balanced, however over the past few years I have noticed a bias style of reporting and coverage in the ABC. Note that in a past episode of Q@A the producers refused to acknowledge my hand going up in the audience, despite my question to them having previously presented in writing a day or two prior! Perhaps an ABC producer didn't like my question, so they just stonewalled it, rather than open up communication channels and discuss my question on the program presented as to having answers for questions!

Note that Publisher Paper Riot Pty Ltd was the Australian publisher of Rolling Stone Australia and they went into external administration in January 2018.

Many readers, be it students, journalists, entertainment industry workers etc etc, prefer reading hard copy. Example: no phones allowed in classrooms, unless granted a teacher exemption. Virgin Voyeur magazine is available in hard copy on Virgin Australia fights, and there is still a Qantas in-flight magazine

Disclosures / Disclaimers: Rolling Stone via Rolling Stone Covers and Shoalhaven City Arts Centre are former clients of mine, while I was the co-director and project manager at Human Statue Bodyart. I currently do not have any commercial agreements with Rolling Stone. I am a sports and media agent, with a background in journalism and subscription television sales. I am a former paid member of the Friends Of The ABC, but haven't been an active member for many years, as I observed their style of media as becoming increasingly bias.

Many thanks for your time and consideration today, and I look forward to your reply with the view to adding to the discussion of diversity of media, flow of information and cost cutting in Australian councils and government. Let's hear it for People Power and freedom of the press.

PS: if Rolling Stone is on its death bed, thank you for the decades of thought stimulating reading and for not becoming a political puppet form of media. The world needs more diversity in media, not less. We know Big Brother doesn't probably care for the expression of media and public in the press, witness the strange by true journey of Wikileaks's Julian, but its up to the citizen journalists of the world, as well as qualified ones, to keep up the good fight.
