Roni
Askey-Doran, author
Roni Askey-Doran has been writing since she could
hold a pen. At four, she began to write stories to
read to her teddy bear at bedtime. At fifteen, with
a desire to see the world, she became a chef and traversed
the globe with her knives, settling wherever she could
find work. While working and travelling, Roni journalled
daily, and kept in close contact with her budding
inner-author.
In
1995, Roni fell headfirst into the role of freelance
journalist while living in the Middle East and she's
been writing professionally ever since.
An
independent scallywag at heart, Roni established her
own magazine publishing business while living in Istanbul,
Turkey. Entitled 'Istanbullshit', the monthly English-language
magazine catered to the country's large ex-pat population
for three years. A self-confessed peripatetic antipodean,
Roni has also had travel articles published in prominent
magazines and newspapers all over the world.
Always
brimming with literary ideas, Roni has written three
novels; two women's literature: drama / biographical
fiction, and one women's literature: comedy, as well
as two travelogues; collections of true short stories
about her own outrageous globetrotting adventures.
Her ever-present chef-self also collaborated with
her writer-self to write three cookbooks about allergen-free
food. She reckons eight books in eight years is not
a bad effort.
Roni
is also a survivor of sexual abuse. She fought for
justice from 1992 to 2002 and finally got her abuser
to trial in 2004. Victorious, Roni immediately wrote
her third novel, Chasing Unicorns; a fictitious account
of her own experiences of abuse and achieving justice.
This is her second novel about abuse, the first is
Pendulum, about coming to terms with abuse. Roni is
also a public speaker and often finds herself in front
of a podium sharing her deeply moving personal story.
Meanwhile,
Roni's comedy series; Annus Horriblis: Diary of a
Nobody, a novel about Kirsten Smith, a hapless thirty-something
career woman who just can't seem to get her life to
work out, has taken a backseat for the time being.
The
sequel is also bursting out of her brain and she plans
to write her fourth novel later this year.
Roni
is a very young 38 years old, happily single, and
currently lives in Townsville, North Queensland.
