Maroubra Climate Action (MaCA) Candidates Forum on Climate Change

Holding our elected representatives to account

Maroubra Climate Action (MaCA) today announced details of their climate change candidates forum. The forum will be an opportunity for people in the state seat of Maroubra to hear Michael Daley M.P. (Labor), Robert Belelli (Liberal) and Anne Gardiner (Greens) outline how they will deal with climate change - the greatest threat facing NSW.

The forum will be held at Matraville Library, 1203 Anzac Parade Malabar, on Tuesday 6th March, from 7 - 9 pm. The state election is on March 24th.

"We are inviting all voters in the seat of Maroubra to come along and hear what the candidates have to say about climate change" said Liesel James, a co-convenor of MaCA. "The more people who turn up, the more the message will get home to all candidates that climate change is an important issue to the people of Maroubra and they want to see real action".

MaCA is urging all parties in the upcoming state election to introduce strong mandatory renewable energy targets and energy efficiency programs. They are also calling for a moratorium on new coal-mines and coal-fired power stations in NSW. MaCA notes with alarm that the State Government seems set to announce approvals for a massive expansion of coal exports from Newcastle, already the world's largest coal export port, once the election is over.

"We need less coal and more renewable energy", said James. "And we need to put a cap on our coal exports. Every tonne of coal that we export comes back to us as climate change - the greatest threat facing the people of Maroubra and NSW".
