Gary David: Artographer and Educator

The Gary David Story

Gary was born into an extraordinary family. His mother had been born blind, as were his three older brothers. This situation led Gary at an early age to become the eyes of his family. He would spend many hours describing the complexity and beauty of nature, texture and colours that made up his world in the country town of Tumut.

Upon reaching adulthood, Gary moved to Wollongong to pursue his future in education and information technology. After teaching at several high schools around the state, Gary pursued a career in the IT industry. While working for Apple Computer and Bullant Technologies, he gained insight into new worlds. In more recent times Gary has been an academic mentor working with classroom teachers to help them integrate technology in their day-to-day practice. Today he is completing his PhD in educational technology.

Destiny continued to intervene in Gary’s life and following a dramatic sea change he refocused his life. And so, gary david - the Artographer was born.

Gary embarked on a new journey that led to rediscovering his previously unexplored gift, the ability to describe the complexity and beauty of nature, texture and colour through his photographs of the everyday - the ordinary. Through his incredible eye for detail he is able to capture for all to see the amazing beauty that surrounds us and yet so often taken for granted.

Gary has assembled a collection of over 35,000 images with the themes ranging from colour combinations, flowers, mechanical elements, abstracts, landscapes, cityscapes, macro-elements, cafes and bars, street scenes, Mardi Gras and other celebrations, including life in his own neighbourhood around Kirribilli.

Because of his resilience and drive to succeed, the next step was obvious; host his first major showing of his work in his own neighbourhood, the very same neighbourhood which now inspired him so much on this in creditable journey.

The synchronicity of more recent events has taught Gary to listen to his intuition and follow his heart. In doing so, Gary has made many new friends, discovered and followed new paths, faced new challenges and encountered new opportunities. A peace of mind and a deeper understanding of himself, his art and the world now follow him everyday.

Gary David’s story and artography will inspire you and open your eyes to things you have never really before seen.

The Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre is located at 16-18 Fitzroy Street, Kirribilli, with the show gary david: the invention, journey and story, opening Friday 16 May and running through to Sunday 18 May.
