The Garvan Institute

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research was founded over forty years ago by the Sisters of Charity as a small research department of St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney.

Since then, it has grown to become one of Australia's largest medical research institutions with over three hundred scientists, students and support staff.

Research facilities are excellent, with all researchers having access to cutting edge techniques and equipment.

The critical mass of leading senior scientists at Garvan ensures that the quality of the research output of Garvan is amongst the best in the world. Garvan receives funding from a range of prestigious sources including the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council, USA National Institute of Health, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, US Army and the Wellcome Trust. Garvan is a member of the St Vincent's and Mater Health Campus and affiliated with the University of New South Wales.
