Inside
the studio, a view to a kill - The
Sydney Morning Herald - 8th August 2006
...Landscapes
of a different kind are on display at Iain Howell
gallery in Balmain. They're the creations of Louise
Whelan who works extensively as an aerial photographer,
and one half of the gallery is devoted to computer-manipulated
views of Sydney from the sky - repeating and inverting
vistas in order to create odd, artificial symmetries.
Upstairs, Whelan offers very different images which
chronicle the increasingly popular world of burlesque,
or, as I suspect it should be labelled, striptease.
These
photographs are affectionate, impressionistic records
of performance but reveal Whelan's uncertain grasp
of the tradition and grammar of documentary photography.
Framing and display of these photographs is also chaotic.
Occasionally Whelan gets close to capturing the sexual
satire at the core of burlesque but I struggled to
find pictures that seriously addressed the humanity
of her energetic subjects.

Sydney's
award winning photographer Louise Whelan has unveiled
her latest collection of contemporary work to a jam
packed Iain Howell Art Gallery in Balmain.
The
exhibition, comprising of three separate bodies of
work, was toasted as a fresh glimpse of the diversity
that is Sydney.
Sydney
an Aerial Perspective reflects the way we live from
a previously unappreciated vantage point and opens
your mind to the endless possibilities around you.
The large range of images allows you to indulge in
a view of our divine city from above.
Sydney
Night Moves is a series of stunning photographs exploring
unique locations across the city in the enchanting
hours of the night.
Sydney's
Burlesque Beauties celebrates the revival of the 60s
art of strip tease and it's rebirth into Sydney culture.
The honest pictures give an insight into the Burlesque
world portraying its raw beauty that, like the art
itself, will remain timeless.
Opening
night's success is a reflection of the exhibitions
appeal to all walks of life. More than a dozen of
the well priced pieces were snapped up by impressed
guests, including an aerial shot by adventurer and
entrepreneur Dick Smith who was on hand to do the
honors of opening the show.
The
exhibition runs until August 17th at Iain Howell Art
Gallery, 230 Darling Street Balmain. Don't miss it!
