Local musicians are donating their time and talent to be part of a fundraiser for Wellington toddler Julian Smith who was disembowelled by a pool filter in January.

Three-year-old Julian has undergone a series of operations at Sydney’s Westmead Children’s Hospital, where his family has relocated to be by his side.

Julian’s aunty, Dubbo woman Kym Coon, has organised a ‘Morning in the Park for Julian’ this Saturday which promises to be a family day in Victoria Park with plenty of activities - and all for a worthy cause.

A group of Dubbo musicians including Dallas Keenes, Sarah Head, Katy-Lee Mills and Patricia Cruzado contacted Mrs Coon to volunteer their time for the fundraiser.

“They approached me, the band phoned me and I want to thank everybody within the community for showing their friendship, kindness and love,” Mrs Coon said.

The event will include yoga, pilates and tai chi classes as well as yoga for kids, a sausage sizzle, coffee van, jumping castle and a series of stalls and other activities.

Mrs Coon will also talk on pool filter safety awareness, and has contacted the Office of Fair Trading to put together a fact sheet on pool filter safety issues.

Inspired by her nephew’s accident, Mrs Coon has taken steps to set up a charity to help local children who suffer from illness or a tragedy.

“I want to give something back to the community,” she said.

“People do care and people can make a difference.”

“I have to make a special mention and thank Julie Bendall for her help regarding setting up the registered charity to help other children within the community who have come to grief through tragedy or trauma.”

On top of this, Mrs Coon is in talks with Westmead Children’s Hospital to undertake a promotional campaign this year about pool filter safety.

Mrs Coon is still on the lookout for an auctioneer, with a number of items ready to be sold on Saturday - but with no one to sell them.

The auction starts at 12.30pm with a painting by Polly Kimmorley, a NSW Blues signed jersey, a sterling silver bracelet and house cleaning products up for sale.

‘Morning in the Park for Julian’ will be held from 9am this Saturday at the rotunda in Victoria Park, with all proceeds going to Julian’s family.
