Online
bingo - market comparison - June 2008
The popularity of online bingo
websites has quadrupled since 2004 and, though
the market is dominated by familiar names from
the offline world such as Gala Bingo, The Sun,
and Ladrokes, an increasing number of web-only
bingo games are capturing market share.
According
to data from Hitwise, the web intelligence service,
the popularity of Bingo in the UK has pretty much
doubled since July 2007 alone, based on UK visits.
The
picture of online bingo as a growing market is
backed up by Google Trends, which shows a four-fold
increase in UK searches for the term “online
bingo” since late 2004.
Which
bingo websites are popular?
According
to the Hitwise data, the biggest player in the
online bingo market is Gala Bingo with more than
25% market share of UK visits.

Gala
is the biggest name in the traditional world of
bingo rooms, with 175 clubs, 5 million members
and 32 million admissions every year. Gala claims
a 40% bingo market share overall (offline and
online, presumably), so it clearly faces tougher
competition on the web.
Foxybingo.com,
ranked second here, is unlikely to be familiar
to traditional bingo players because it lacks
a high-street presence, but has made a significant
impact in the online world. The Hitwise data below
shows that Foxy Bingo has closed the gap in the
past year from more than 20% to just over 10%
share of UK visits.
