It was one of those magical nights that will never
quite be duplicated.
The Young Garvan, motivated professionals who support
the Garvan Institute's medical research, recently
held their highly anticipated 'Viva Las Vegas' fundraising
party at Ruby Rabbit.
The event was elitist (but not pretentious), as Sydney's
super A-List was there (name dropping is not encouraged
in and around Garvan and Ruby Rabbit).
My invitation came at the 11th hour via offspring
of one of Australia's most successful media power
brokers. Needless to say, I didn't decline the invite.
I hold the RR in high regard, having last attended
De Nom to welcome home Miss Asia Pacific - Miss World
Australia, Sabrina Houssami (whist participating in
the "no photo" ban lifting!).
Back to this party, the Vegas theme was in full flight
with ladies and gents dressed to the nines, Black
Jack, Poker and a Big Wheel, and complimentary chips
provided! There were goddesses a plenty and a generous
variety of drinks on the house for the majority of
the evening, many of which were served by the impressive
and flamboyant, Steven Lyon.
Ok, with one name drop comes another
the live
entertainment was provided by Mahalia Barnes (with
a voice equal to her talented father), with back up
vocals from Juanita Tippins and Yana Boston on drums.
The paparazzi was also "invitation only"
(many got knocked back), and I couldn't pass up the
opportunity to have a photo with Mahalia and her band.
Rob Bryson-Richardson was quick to snap, whilst being
friendly, non obtrusive and respectful of everyone's
privacy.
For the uninitiated, the Garvan Institute is home
to many of Australia's top medical researchers. It's
fair to say that they are modern day Einstein's, but
what impressed me the most is that they made me feel
at home (despite my non - uni background).
For the record almost $13 000 was raised on the night
and a great time was had by all.
This event proves that the Young Garvan has come of
age (as has the Ruby Rabbit), and that the bar has
once again been raised in the battle for Sydney's
philanthropic and entertainment dollar.
Young Garvan has once again cemented Ruby Rabbit's
reputation as the place to be. Viva!
