Underbelly Cops A Beating At Crown Casino Logies, by Greg Tingle - 3rd May 2010

Australia's night of nights, The Logies, took centre stage last night at James Packer owned Crown Casino, down under in Melbourne, Australia.

Ever wondered if the Logies were "rigged"? We didn't, but know it crossed the mind of some, given the strong history between Crown Casino owner, Packer, Network Nine and ACP Magazines (publisher of TV Week). Last night should have answered that question without a doubt.

Beloved 'Underbelly', Network Nine darling and dear friend to the Gambling911 copped an absolute flogging, failing to win a single award... that's right a donut (0). Belly up you might say, but the show returns to TV next Sunday night, expected to once again draw in huge audience numbers.

Underbelly had five nominations across the popular and outstanding categories and was expected to dominate!

Ray Meagher picked up the Gold Logie.

The veteran Home And Away actor triumphed over Packed To The Rafters actress Rebecca Gibney to take the coveted award.

He also beat his Home And Away co-star Esther Anderson, Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation's Shaun Micallef, Good News Week's Paul McDermott, Rove McManus and the ABC's Wil Anderson and Adam Hills.

"In 1965 at the Regatta Hotel in Brisbane I won a chook raffle," a beaming Meagher said as he took to the stage.

"It's been a long time between drinks".

Host Bert Newton could not hide his feelings about Meagher's big win.

"I have had the opportunity over the years to present many Gold Logies," he said.

"None have given me more joy than to present this to Ray Meagher."

Bert's son Matthew (Mr Asia in Underbelly: A Tale Of Two Cities) is currently in rehab.

'Underbelly' star Firass Diriani (plays John Ibrahim) was in attendance, and was very well behaved we understand. Dirani recently picked up that Cleo 'Bachelor Of The Year' award.

Sigrid Thornton who plays a hardened federal officer in Underbelly: The Golden Mile was also in attendance and also enjoy the gala evening incident free.

Nine Network won only one Logie for the NRL Footy Show.

"Well Channel Nine is certainly cleaning up this year, aren't they?", joked host Bert Newton.

Bragging rights of the corporate variety remain in full swing...Packer's Crown Casino certainly won its "casino war" last night against Sydney's Tabcorp owned Star City Casino, but Star City is planning a counter attack, so don't change your dial!

Media Man spies advise no plastic handcuffs were needed last night for footballers, cricketers, or any other guests.

Loyal readers, we're sorry that 'Underbelly' with its strong gambling themes and all got shot down, at Crown Casino to add salt into the wound. None the less, here's the winners list to help ease the pain...

Readers, er punters. Don't do anything we wouldn't do. Let's keep the winning attitude despite last night's "crime of the century"... maybe Crown Casino powers that be just wanted to show the world that the Logies were a fair fight, and with Australian football and sports betting under the microscope re The Melbourne Storm and Aussie cricketers in India being whispered about, maybe that's a very good thing. Good luck.

Crown Casino Plays Restaurant And Hotel Card, by Greg Tingle - 22nd April 2010

Crown Casino king James Packer and his 'World Of Entertainment' empire have been telling folks that they're in the tourism, lifestyle and entertainment business for a few years now. Tonight, Mr Packer and Billionaire Inc get to prove their point once again, with even Australian politicians on hand, and of course a bush tucker bag of celebs.

Media Man and Gambling911 probe the situation and learn that indeed Packer is transforming the Crown experience to world class levels all the way.

Packer's be hitting the phones again. Not for GenerationOne on this occasion, but for his own in-house baby... the Crown Metropol.

Tonight's the night, and there's no missing this one...TV chef celeb Gordon Ramsay and Victorian Premier John Brumby will join Packer for the grand opening of Crown's third luxury hotel in Melbourne.

The red carpet event kicks off at 5.30pm, and those that can't attend (most of us), can check out the Fairfax Media and News Limited websites more more info. The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald are tipped to get some snazzy multimedia and shots from the powers that be at Packer's Crown.

The Crown Metropol is estimated to have cost $300 million, almost pocket change for 'Our James', based of the revenues his pulling in from Crown Macau, Burswood and other enterprises.

The hotel is going to play home for Ramsay's premier Aussie restaurant maze and maze Grill, and rumors of a reality TV show are circulating.

Ramsay is having a hard time living town his verbal war of words with A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw at last year's Melbourne Good Food and Wine Show. Just get a few beers and wines in ya Ramsay, you'll be right (we hope), or it might be the plastic handcuff treatment for you... just kidding, we think. Ramsey, one of the Burswood bouncers hurt the arm of a patron recently and it became a legal affair, so you've be forewarned. Once bitten, twice shy, or maybe not?

Other celebs pitched to be at tonight's gig include Eddie and Carla McGuire, Anthony Pratt, Neil Perry, Deborah Hutton, and Shane Warne (888 Poker Twitter "Nut") and wife Simone.

A cocktail party will following the official opening, and that's when the real fun begins. Media insiders are almost hoping for a GenerationOne "sponsored" plastic handcuff battle royal... aw well, we can always hope. Footballers, cricket legends and poker players will be well aware that the media is just waiting to pounce on them in the drinks and whatever get too much, but it's a wait and see situation. There's also versions of "eyes in the sky", so not much will be missed.

The venue comprises of a massive 658 rooms, a sky-high residential day spa and a rooftop bar offering 180-degree views of Melbourne's skyline. Plenty of scope to look out for 'Underbelly' action (if its not already happening on the premises).

Crown's hoping to lure in some 250,000 guests in its virgin year, and given many were ready to write off Packer for broke a few years ago, don't bet against this man. As Kerry Packer famously said, "I'll toss you for it".

Sydney's Star City Casino looses tonight's casino battle for media, PR, dolphins and whale VIP's, but keep those warheads and Gulfsteam jets warmed up. There's always tomorrow.

So punters, are you ready to "Wear The Crown", as the tag line says?

Stay glued to Gambling911, and we will forgive you on this occasion if you slip on over to The Age, News Limited and Media Man websites at around 6pm for some smashing highlights. Cheers, and have a drink for me.

Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex is a casino and entertainment precinct on the south bank of the Yarra River, in Melbourne, Australia attracting on average 16 million visitors yearly, making it the largest casino in Australia. Crown Casino is a unit of Crown Limited.

The complex was designed by multiple architects including award winning Daryl Jackson and opened in 1997. The complex is one of the central features of the Southbank area in the central business district and the Crown Promenade fronts onto the waterfront as part of Southbank Promenade. Children under 18 are permitted into the entertainment section of Crown but not into the gaming area or areas serving alcohol.

Casino

Crown Casino opened in 1994 at the World Trade Centre on the north bank of the Yarra River, moving to the new complex at Southbank in 1997. Actress Rachel Griffiths infamously ran through the casino topless on its opening night. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week except on Christmas Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day. On these days Crown is closed from 4am and reopens 12 noon. It was originally founded, owned and run by Lloyd Williams until the Packer takeover by PBL in 1999. Crown Casino is the largest casino in the southern hemisphere, has a license for 350 table games and 2500 poker machines.

Games
Amongst other games, Crown provides the 6 main casino games of Blackjack, Craps, Pai Gow, Poker, Baccarat and Roulette but it was also the founder of an electronic version of Roulette known as Rapid Roulette. Rapid Roulette is essentially the same as traditional roulette but rather than players placing bets on a layout, all gaming takes place on a personal electronic touch screen connected to a central roulette wheel. The benefit of this is that the player has easy access to the entire betting layout, and due to the electronic nature of the game, it is both fast and accurate. Rapid Roulette has been in use for several years, and recently Rapid Bigwheel and Rapid Sic-bo have been developed.

As well as Caribbean Stud Poker on the main gaming floor, Crown has also long offered varieties of poker including Texas Hold'em. The Crown Poker Room has recently grown with the increased popularity of poker and now encompasses a large separate space in the Crown basement known as the Poker Room.

Crown casino has 2500 poker machines on the casino floor, with values of 1 cent, 2 cent, 5 cent, 10 cent, 20 Cent, 50 cent and 1 dollar available for patrons to play. The slot machines at Crown are made by Aristocrat, VLC, AGT, IGT, Konami and Stargames, with 2 Dollar machines being introduced into the VIP area.

Rewards programs
The Crown Casino have a rewards program called "Crown Club" where by playing both poker machines and table games earn the player points on the card for credit or other bonuses.

Entertainment complex

The Crown Entertainment Complex incorporates several nightclubs, a Village Cinema complex and multiple restaurants, fast food outlets, food courts and shops. The complex also houses "Galactic Circus", an electronic games arcade, laser 'tag' game and bowling alley. Notable features of the casino include its colourful entrance (commonly known as the 'Atrium', featuring stepped fountains and sound/light shows under the themes of the four seasons), and pyrotechnic towers running the length of the Casino promenade. Many luxury branded stores such as:

Prada
Burberry
Louis Vuitton
Versace

Hotels

The two hotel towers are named Crown Towers Hotel and Crown Promenade Hotel. The Crown Towers Hotel opened with the complex and is the most luxurious of the pair, located on the banks of the Yarra River overlooking the city centre, Kings Domain, Port Phillip and Docklands. A speciality area called the Crystal Club Lounge is available to people who stay in some of the more expensive suites at the Hotel.

The Crown Promenade Hotel is located on Whiteman Street. A third hotel is under construction being built at the corner of Whiteman and Clarendon Streets, Southbank. The new, as yet unnamed hotel will feature similar facilities to Crown Promenade Hotel.

The Palladium Room

The Palladium at Crown is Melbourne's grandest ballroom, with a seating capacity of 1,500 it has played host to some of Australia's premier functions including the annual TV Week Logie Awards, Brownlow Medal, Allan Border Medal and the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix ball. It also hosted a few weddings in 2008.

Blackout

On Friday January 30 2009 The crown casino and entertainment complex was evacuated due to a blackout as a result of a 3 day heatwave. 1,200 were evacuated from the gaming floor as well as many other from the complexes shops and restaurants. The blackout lasted from 6:30pm till about midnight. Gamers were refunded cash which they had entered into poker machine before the blackout in the following days. (Credit: Wikipedia)
