John Cena Announces Tournament To Determine His Final Opponent

November 1, 2025

The road to John Cena’s final match has taken a dramatic turn. During a video package that aired on tonight’s Saturday Night’s Main Event broadcast, John Cena himself announced that his final opponent will be determined by a 16-man tournament.

The tournament is set to be one of the most unpredictable in recent memory. Cena revealed that the 16-man field will feature competitors from Raw, SmackDown, NXT, and “maybe even talent who don’t work in WWE.” This opens the door to a host of dream scenarios and potential surprise entrants from other promotions, all vying for the historic opportunity to be John Cena’s final opponent on December 13 at the Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C.

August 2025

John Cena Will Be Featured At Major Upcoming WWE Events

The WWE retirement tour of John Cena will continue at Clash in Paris on August 31st when he faces Logan Paul in a singles match for the first time. While it may not be the main event, it will be Cena’s last time wrestling in Paris, so it should be one of the loudest crowds of the year.

WWE also confirmed that John Cena will be in action at the first-ever Wrestlepalooza PLE on September 20th in Indianapolis. That will be a historic show for the company because it marks the start of WWE’s new US PLE deal with ESPN, which will feature PLE’s streaming on the new ESPN app, starting with Wrestlepalooza.

It’s not confirmed yet, but Cena will likely be against Brock Lesnar at Wrestlepalooza. Lesnar is scheduled for SmackDown on September 12th and 19th, and his match at Wrestlepalooza will be his first WWE match in over two years.

"Stop. Cut the music. Cody, sit down" John Cena

"Give me a second guys, hold on. Give me a second," John Cena

"Hold on, Cody. I have bad news. I have some bad news tonight. I am not going to be at SummerSlam. I know, I know. First to me your hearing this. The look on your face. This is your night. I had to take it to the top of the chain of command. Hear me out please, ok. Everybody knows I am filming a big movie for Netflix in New York City. Netflix knows about this. There's no surprises here. We talked, things have been transparent. I am emotionally exhausted, and we all feel that it is best I do not physically compete at SummerSlam. Wait, hold on. No no, let's not jump to conclusions here. Hey, hey. I know about earning stuff and I'm out here to be the good guy. Ok, you earned rematch" .. John Cena

Quotes

You can't see me!
Word Life!
The Champ is here.
Whether fighting or spitting, my discipline is unforgiving!
If you want some, come get some!
I haven't backed down from a fight in my life, and I won't start tonight.
Kicking ass and taking names. Making checks and breaking necks.
I never back down, I never quit!
I regret nothing and fear less.
Live fast, fight hard, no regrets!
My time is now!
I admire the military. I guess in a world of villains and heroes, they're my heroes. Their dedication, their commitment, their discipline, their code of ethics.
I have certain things that I stand for, certain things that I believe in, and if you don't like it and you tell me to go to hell, I think that's your God-given right as a fan. It's one of those deals where I'm that one guy who is outside of that realm of good guy, bad guy. I'm just me, and it elicits a response both positive and negative.
I'm the one person who wears the words 'hustle, loyalty, respect' on my T-shirts and merchandise. My audience is children. It's very flattering to see a kid wear your T-shirt; it's even more flattering to have a dad come up to you and say, 'I watch you with my kid. Keep doing what you're doing. You're a role model for my son.'
When people show loyalty to you, you take care of those who are with you. It's how it goes with everything. If you have a small circle of friends, and one of those friends doesn't stay loyal to you, they don't stay your friend for very long.
I don't have any elaborate uniforms; I come to the ring in a T-shirt, a pair of sneakers and some shorts.
Seriously, I grew up a fan of Hulk Hogan, and I think I bring some of his best values to the ring... the values of a superhero. Always do your best. Never give up... I think kids want to believe in that, and they should believe in that.
I'm the guy who'll drive 250 miles tonight and be at the gym tomorrow at 10 A.M., when people are still sleeping in. I'm the guy who'll fly to Australia and find a gym. Fly back and first thing I do off the plane is work out before I shower or eat.
I think the greatest hip-hop artist of all time is Jay-Z, without a doubt. He just keeps amazing me with his performance, and since '96, that guy has been producing at least one hit every summer and every winter. That's a pretty good resume.
People can say whatever they want about the sport of bodybuilding, but to get prepared to do a contest or even think about doing a contest, or even to get into decent shape, it requires a certain amount of discipline, and it comes from taking a new year's resolution to a lifestyle.
By the time I was 15 and I stepped in the high school gym, I was just stronger than everybody.
Paul Bearer was very influential in the early stages of my career. He constantly hounded me and I just think he realized the potential that was there. He convinced me that I was in the right place and doing the right thing.
I'm not trying to brainwash my critics. If they're critics, they're critics, and that's their job to be critical, but I certainly enjoy the involvement I have with my fans. I enjoy the time I get to spend with them, and I don't waste time with someone stubborn who is not going to come around.
If you don't learn from your mistakes, then they become regrets.
As a kid, what brought me in the gym, what got me in there every day was a chance to break your personal best, a chance to be strong; I just really, really dig that.
Winning the Royal Rumble is as big an accomplishment as anything.
I hang out with a lot of the people I did when I was in high school, when I was in college, and I have a strong unit of people around me, whether it be friends or family, and if my head gets too big, they will definitely check me immediately.
'Tropic Thunder' is one of my favorite movies of all time. 'Blazing Saddles.' Anything that will get me to smile.
I don't doll myself up for TV because I want people to accept me for who I am.
My favorite thing about 'Saturday Night's Main Event,' it was that one time where I could stay up late with my dad and four brothers, and we would all beat the tar out of each other while the show was on, and it was all okay because my dad was a wrestling fan.
I hate any match that isn't a traditional Tag Team Match or a traditional Singles Match, because anything can happen. It's truly one of those deals where it's all about being in the right place at the right time.
Pretty much my feel toward MCs is, if you really got heart, you got passion, let's get on and do something. I like doing stuff with people that's real.
But I've been freestyling and messing around with rhyming since I was 13. That's when I really started listening to hip-hop music.
My home is at the WWE. I truly do love performing. The atmosphere here isn't like anything else. It's truly where I belong.
I don't play a character. It's totally just an extension of myself.
I'm fine with being beat-up and pushed around, but I'm really scared of heights and scared of ledges.
My dad is the reason I actually started watching wrestling. My dad was never big into sports; we were all big into sports as kids, and he'd go to our Little League games or whatever and not really know what was going on, because he didn't know about sports, but he knew about wrestling.
I watch just as much WWE as almost anyone, but I love to. It's something I enjoy doing. I don't force myself to watch. I get excited for Mondays. I get excited to see the show.
A lot of the stuff that I say doesn't even make TV because it gets cut out. So if you're at the live events you get to hear what I have to say, but if you're watching on TV, you're only getting about 50% of it.
Whether you like me or you don't, I still dig showing up for work.
I think the way WWE Studios is going now - they're going away from action, doing more drama, more comedy - it will open a lot of people's eyes. Because a lot of people see big guy, big frame: action superstar. We've proven, especially with 'Legendary,' that that is not always the case.
If you watch wrestling, you now know the hip-hop culture is being represented with wrestling. For the longest time, the cultures have almost been parallel.
My most string-beanish, I guess, is when I was 15 years old. From 15 to 16, I went from 155 pounds to 215. By the time I graduated from high school, I was between 235-250.
Ric Flair is one of the most entertaining guys to sit down with and by entertaining I don't mean he has catchy phrases, but that he's been through so much and his experiences are so genuine I could listen to him talk all day.
When my job isn't performing in a WWE ring, my job is to get back performing in that ring. When I'm hurt, all I have to do all day is get strong and get better. I'm a very dedicated physical therapy patient, and that helps a lot.
I was very unique as a child, dressed a certain way, acted a certain way, didn't fit in with everybody. So I immediately got picked on, especially around the age of 12 and 13, when you start going to junior high and start mingling with the older kids. To counteract that, strictly for self-defense, I wanted to get bigger.
I take pride in the fact that a lot of little kids dig what I do.
We really do have a lot of personality in WWE. You have to, to be in this job. You showcase a lot of personality.
The conditioning and the lifestyle changes you have to make to remain a healthy athlete are what molded me into what I am today.
When I hear people boo, that just makes me want to go out there and work harder.
When you see me on TV, that's about as close to my real personality as you can get.
In 1985, if you were a wrestling fan, you were into Hogan; that's just the way it was.
Chicago fans cheer and boo who they want. They're great fans whether they like me or not. They show you how they feel. I don't like crowds that sit on their hands.
I'm a small-time white kid trying to represent hip-hop. If a hip-hop artist comes up and beats me in a battle, who did they beat? A small-town white kid who ain't never been an MC, who ain't never done nothing. Now if an MC comes to battle and they get beat by a small-town white boy, that's MC suicide.
Did you ever think I'd slime a cow.

Wrestling Career

WWE Farewell Tour and Heel Turn: Cena is currently on his WWE farewell tour, set to retire from in-ring competition by the end of 2025. A significant development occurred at WWE Elimination Chamber on March 1, 2025, where Cena shocked fans by turning heel (becoming a villain) for the first time in his career. He aligned with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, betraying Cody Rhodes and securing a championship match at WrestleMania 41. This heel turn, kept secret by WWE, involved a low blow to Rhodes and assistance from rapper Travis Scott, leading to Cena winning his record-breaking 17th world championship title at WrestleMania 41, surpassing Ric Flair’s record.

Recent Matches and Feuds: Cena retained the Undisputed WWE Championship against CM Punk at Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia on June 28, 2025, with interference from Seth Rollins. The ongoing rivalry with Punk is set to culminate at Night of Champions, renewing their historic feud from 2011. Cena also faced R-Truth on SmackDown, with tensions escalating after R-Truth blindsided him. Additionally, Cena defeated Randy Orton at WWE Backlash 2025.Money in the Bank and Royal Rumble: At Money in the Bank 2025, Cena teamed with Cody Rhodes in a tag team match, but he was pinned, sparking speculation about his booking. He also lost to Jey Uso in the Men’s Royal Rumble 2025, marking a significant moment in his final year.Retirement Plans: Cena announced his retirement at Money in the Bank 2024 in Toronto, emphasizing his final run in 2025. He’s promised fans “unforgettable” moments, with appearances scheduled at events like Saturday Night’s Main Event and WrestleMania 42, where Cody Rhodes may seek redemption.

Acting Career

Heads of State: Cena stars alongside Idris Elba and Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the action-comedy Heads of State, which premiered on Prime Video on July 2, 2025.

The film, where Cena plays a fictional U.S. President, topped global charts within 24 hours, outperforming titles like The Accountant 2. Reviews praise its entertainment value despite its lack of depth.Peacemaker Season 2:

The second season of Peacemaker, where Cena reprises his role, is set to release on Max on August 21, 2025. A new trailer has generated buzz, with Cena promoting it on social media.

Other Projects: Cena recently filmed a Netflix comedy in New Jersey with Eric André and made a brief cameo in James Gunn’s Superman movie.

He’s also reflected on past roles, praising Dave Bautista as the top wrestler-turned-actor for his range.

Personal Life and Other Updates

Public Appearances: C

ena attended the Anant Ambani-Radhika Merchant wedding in July 2024, where he met Shah Rukh Khan and commented on the lavish food. He also made headlines for his near-naked appearance at the 2024 Oscars, using an envelope for modesty in a skit.

Health and Advocacy: Cena recently discussed being diagnosed with skin cancer, emphasizing the importance of sunscreen.

He continues his work with Make-A-Wish, holding a Guinness World Record for granting the most wishes.

Social Media Presence: Cena remains active on X, sharing motivational posts and updates about his WWE and acting endeavors, such as his excitement for his final Toronto appearance at Elimination Chamber.

Critical Perspective

While Cena’s heel turn and championship win have been major talking points, some fans and analysts question the booking decisions, arguing his “Super Cena” persona and frequent title wins overshadow emerging talent.

The scripted nature of wrestling means these storylines are designed for drama, but the shift to a villain role after years as a heroic figure has sparked mixed reactions, with some fans disappointed by the betrayal of his “Hustle, Loyalty, Respect” ethos.

In acting, while Heads of State is a commercial success, critics note Cena’s roles often lean on his action-hero persona, with limited depth compared to peers like Bautista.

WrestleMania 41 is shaping up to be a major event! It’s scheduled to take place over two nights on Saturday, April 19, and Sunday, April 20, 2025, at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada, near Las Vegas. This will be the 41st annual WrestleMania, hosted by WWE, and it’s being promoted as "WrestleMania Vegas"—the second time the event has come to the Las Vegas area since WrestleMania IX in 1993.

The event will feature wrestlers from WWE’s Raw and SmackDown brands and will be broadcast via pay-per-view and livestreaming. Notably, it’ll be the first WrestleMania to stream on Netflix in most international markets (following the WWE Network’s merger with the platform in January 2025), while it’ll air on Peacock in the U.S. It’s also the first WrestleMania to fall on Easter weekend, which makes its late-April timing unique compared to its usual mid-March to early-April slot.

One confirmed highlight is John Cena’s final WrestleMania match. Cena announced his retirement from in-ring competition by the end of 2025, and he’s set to compete at this event—his 23rd year with WWE. While his opponent isn’t officially locked in as of now, there’s buzz from posts on X suggesting a potential showdown with Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship, especially after speculation about Cena winning a title shot at Elimination Chamber. However, that’s not confirmed yet—WWE’s storylines are still unfolding.
The week leading up to WrestleMania 41 will be packed with events in Las Vegas:
Friday, April 18: A special "WrestleMania Edition" of Friday Night SmackDown at T-Mobile Arena.

Saturday, April 19: NXT Stand & Deliver in the afternoon at T-Mobile Arena, followed by WrestleMania Night 1 at Allegiant Stadium.

Sunday, April 20: WrestleMania Night 2 at Allegiant Stadium.

Monday, April 21: The Raw after WrestleMania at T-Mobile Arena.

April 17–21: WWE World, a five-day fan convention at the Las Vegas Convention Center, featuring Superstar meet-and-greets, panels, and more. The 2025 WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony will also happen during this week, though its exact date and venue are still TBD. Tickets for WrestleMania 41 are available via Ticketmaster (2-day combo tickets went on sale late 2024), and Priority Pass packages through On Location offer premium experiences like ringside seats and Superstar appearances.

The official theme song is "Fein" by Travis Scott, and with Las Vegas as the backdrop, WWE is aiming to make this one of its biggest spectacles yet. Any specific questions about it—like matches, tickets, or travel plans? I can dig deeper if you’d like! (Grok)

‘Coyote vs. Acme’ May Be Saved

March 2025

John Cena's Voice May Be Heard, Not Seen, In Film; But Film Tipped To Hit Screens!

More than a year after Warner Bros. shelved “Coyote vs. Acme” for tax incentives, the Looney Tunes-inspired film is close to finding a home!

Ketchup Entertainment is tipped to land distribution rights for “Coyote vs. Acme.” Thought the sale has not closed as we go to press, the price tag is reportedly in the $50 million range, according to industry staple Deadline, which broke the news.

Ketchup Entertainment, an independent distributor, recently spearheaded the theatrical release of “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” after Warner Bros. Discovery decided to shop around that film as well. “The Day the Earth Blew Up” opened in theaters on March 14 and has grossed $3.9 million at the US box office to date.

News Flashback To Help Get All Up To Speed, Beep Beep!

December 2023

Warner Bros. decided to put John Cena’s “Coyote vs Acme” movie on hold indefinitely despite spending $70 million on the project.

However, the studio is now allowing the filmmakers to pitch the movie to other studios following the negative response to the news of its cancellation.

Chris DeFaria and James Gunn produced the movie. “Coyote vs Acme” is based on the iconic Looney Tunes character Wile E. Coyote, who is constantly unsuccessful in trying to catch and eliminate his arch-nemesis, the Road Runner.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Netflix and Paramount have submitted official offers for the film. Paramount’s proposal suggests releasing it in theaters next year and streaming it on Paramount+. Sources noted in the report stated that Warner Bros. Discovery is seeking “$70 million and then some” to cover the initial tax write-off for Warner Bros.

There are reports that Amazon is considering making a bid, but Apple and Sony, who have also viewed the film, are not interested.

About The Suicide Squad: From writer/director James Gunn comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ superhero action adventure “The Suicide Squad,” featuring a collection of the most degenerate delinquents in the DC lineup. Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them. The film stars Margot Robbie (“Birds of Prey,” “Bombshell”), Idris Elba (“Avengers: Infinity War”), John Cena (upcoming HBO Max series “Peacemaker,” “Bumblebee”), Joel Kinnaman (“Suicide Squad”), Jai Courtney (the “Divergent” franchise), Peter Capaldi (“World War Z,” BBC’s “Doctor Who” ), David Dastmalchian (upcoming “Dune,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp”), Daniela Melchior (“Parque Mayer”), Michael Rooker (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films), Alice Braga (“Elysium”), Pete Davidson (“The King of Staten Island,” TV’s “Saturday Night Live”), Joaquín Cosio (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” TV’s “Narcos: Mexico”), Juan Diego Botto (“The Europeans”), Storm Reid (“The Invisible Man,” “A Wrinkle in Time”, “Euphoria”), Nathan Fillion (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” TV’s “The Rookie”), Steve Agee (“Brightburn,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”), Sean Gunn (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, the “Avengers” films), Mayling Ng (“Wonder Woman”), Flula Borg (“Ralph Breaks the Internet”), Jennifer Holland (“Brightburn,” upcoming HBO Max series “Peacemaker”) and Tinashe Kajese (TV’s “Valor,” “The Inspectors”), with Sylvester Stallone (the “Rocky,” “Rambo” and “Expendables” franchises), and Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Suicide Squad”). Gunn (the “Guardian of the Galaxy” films) directs from his own screenplay, based on characters from DC. The film is produced by Charles Roven and Peter Safran, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Walter Hamada, Chantal Nong Vo, Nikolas Korda and Richard Suckle executive producing. Gunn’s creative team includes director of photography Henry Braham (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”), production designer Beth Mickle (“Captain Marvel”), editors Fred Raskin (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood”) and Christian Wagner (the “Fast & Furious” films) and Oscar-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”). The music is by John Murphy (“Kick-Ass”). Warner Bros.
