News
June
2025
WWE's
Acquisition of AAA:
In
April 2025, WWE announced the acquisition of Lucha
Libre AAA Worldwide during WrestleMania 41, marking
a significant move in the wrestling world. This partnership,
in collaboration with Mexico-based Fillip, aims to
elevate AAA's global presence, with a crossover event,
"Worlds Collide," scheduled for June 7,
2025, at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, featuring stars
like Rey Mysterio, Penta, and Vikingo. The acquisition
has sparked debates about cultural appropriation versus
growth opportunities for Mexican wrestling.
Alberto
Del Rio's Controversial Return: Alberto Del Rio (aka
Alberto El Patron) has been in the spotlight for attacking
a major AAA star's father on a TV show, drawing criticism.
Despite past legal issues, including a 2020 sexual
assault charge that was dropped in 2021, Del Rio signed
a new WWE contract following the AAA acquisition.
However, Hijo del Vikingo defeated him to become the
new AAA Megacampeón on May 31, 2025, as announced
by AAA on social media.
Lucha
Libre Legend Passes: Esteban Mares Castañeda,
known as Black Terry, a revered figure in UWA, CMLL,
and IWRG, passed away at 72 in April 2025. His contributions,
including holding the UWA World Lightweight Championship
for 823 days, left a lasting impact on trios wrestling.
Title
Changes and Events: AAA vacated its Tag Team titles
in March 2025 due to inactivity by champions Raj Dhesi
and Satnam Singh. New champions are yet to be crowned.
Meanwhile, CMLL announced international collaborations,
including appearances by AEW's Orange Cassidy and
RevPro's Zoe Lucas and Amira Blair.
Cultural
Significance: Lucha Libre continues to be a cultural
cornerstone in Mexico, with discussions about its
global expansion raising questions about preserving
its traditions versus adapting for broader audiences. These
updates reflect the dynamic state of Lucha Libre,
balancing tradition with modern wrestling industry
shifts. For more details on WWE's plans or AAAs
events, check sources like WrestleTalk or AAAs
official channels.
