WWE
Saturday Night's Main Event is a professional wrestling
television special produced by WWE, originally airing
on NBC from 1985 to 1992 as a replacement for Saturday
Night Live reruns in its late-night slot. It was known
for featuring high-profile, star vs. star matches,
unlike the typical weekly wrestling shows of the era
that focused on squash matches.
The
show contributed to the "second golden age"
of wrestling in the U.S., drawing large audiences
with stars like Hulk Hogan, André the Giant,
and Randy Savage. It was revived briefly from 2006
to 2008 as prime-time specials and repurposed for
house shows in 2022. In September 2024, WWE announced
its return as part of a deal with NBCUniversal, with
quarterly specials airing on NBC and streaming on
Peacock, featuring Raw and SmackDown performers.
The
most recent episodes include:
December
14, 2024 (XXXVII): Held at Nassau Veterans Memorial
Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, the same venue as
the 1985 debut. Matches included Cody Rhodes retaining
the Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens,
Chelsea Green defeating Michin to become the inaugural
Womens United States Champion, Liv Morgan defending
the Womens World Championship against IYO SKY,
and Drew McIntyre defeating Sami Zayn. The event featured
commentary by Jesse Ventura and Pat McAfee, with a
retro aesthetic including red, white, and blue ring
ropes and the "Obsession" theme by Animotion.January
25, 2025: Took place at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio,
Texas.
Key matches included Gunther retaining the World Heavyweight
Championship against Jey Uso, Rhea Ripley defending
the Womens World Championship against Nia Jax,
Bron Breakker retaining the Intercontinental Championship
against Sheamus, and Braun Strowman defeating Jacob
Fatu by disqualification. A contract signing for a
Royal Rumble ladder match between Cody Rhodes and
Kevin Owens, moderated by Shawn Michaels, ended with
Michaels hitting Owens with Sweet Chin Music. Commentary
issues with overlapping English and Spanish audio
were noted early in the broadcast.May 24, 2025 (XXXIX):
Scheduled
for Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida, post-WrestleMania
41.
Announced matches include Jey Uso defending the World
Heavyweight Championship against Logan Paul,
John
Cena facing R-Truth, CM Punk and Sami Zayn teaming
against Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker, and a steel
cage match between Damian Priest and Drew McIntyre.
Notably,
no womens matches have been announced yet, which
would mark a departure from the prior two events if
unchanged
.The
revival emphasizes nostalgia with retro elements while
showcasing current WWE stars.
Its part of a five-year agreement with NBCUniversal,
producing four prime-time specials annually. You can
watch on NBC or stream on Peacock, with international
markets accessing it on YouTube.

Man: In many ways the highlight of tonight's show,
even though the clip goes for only about a minute.
Ventura is a strong advocate for wrestlers rights,
which is a good thing. "The Body" colour
commentary was one of the aspects we most enjoyed
about pro wrestling from 1985 and into what became
known as the golden era of the WWE (then WWE). Great
to see Ventura connect with the WWE powers that be.
Numerous pro wrestlers impersonate Ventura from time
to time including heel fav Karrion Kross! Ventura
understood and still understands what the pro wrestling
industry is about. In-ring work and the technical
aspects is only part of the equation. It's about the
whole performance aspect of it, as well as using one's
mind, managing the risk, protecting ones self, the
opponent, and so much more. Ventura also holds a big
W over the WWE in a long past business battle. One
of the legends of sports entertainment. Not the greatest
pure technical wrestler, but this is pro wrestling
folks, and Ventura is a true professional and master
of putting together all the elements. He knew what
to do, what to say, and when - timing is everything,
and his colour commentary is/was like magic. Like
"baking a cake" as X Corp founder Elon Musk
may say. You have to get all the ingredients right.
Can't wait to see what's next for Ventura in and around
the WWE Universe. Jesse, Jesse, Jesse! Massive thumbs
up legend. Win-Win-Win!
Famous
movie line: "I ain't got time to bleed"
(Predator) 1987. As Blain.
